A method of quenching metals is described, comprising immersing said metals in a quenching oil composition comprising: (a) a base oil, and (b) a compound represented by the general formula (1) or (2) as described below. ##STR1## (wherein all the symbols are the same as defined in the claims). The use of the quenching oil composition results in the formation of a black coating layer on the metal, producing those metallic articles having improved characteristics, such as good lubricity and rust preventive properties.

A method of protecting silver contacts in switches for electronic equipment is provided by utilizing a silicone-based grease which is comprised of a polyorganosiloxane base in combination with a thickener such as finely divided silica or a metal soap and an organomercaptan compound represented by R.sup.2 SH wherein R.sup.2 represents a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 18 to 22 carbon atoms. There may also be optionally included an ester bond-containing organic compound for improved properties when the treated silver contacts have relatively high contact pressure.

Lubricant compositions having increased lubricity are obtained by forming a mixture of a major amount of a silicone lubricant and a minor amount of a sulfur containing compound dissolved in the silicone and including at least two sulfur atoms per molecule. According to a preferred form of the invention, from 1 to 10 parts by weight of di-tertiary-nonyl polysulfide are admixed with from 99-90 parts by weight of a silicone oil to provide a new composition which functions properly as a lubricant under loads as high as 240 kilograms when employing the Shell 4Ball EP machine. Without the polysulfide additive, the silicone oil is not useful as a lubricant under loads exceeding about 40 kilograms when employing the Shell 4-Ball EP machine.

This invention relates to lubricating finishes for Spandex fibers, which finishes contain a mineral oil, a silicone oil, and an aminoalkyl-modified polyorganosiloxane to which may be added oleic acid or iso-stearic acid and/or butyl stearate. The finishes of this invention prevent blocking of the Spandex fibers, inhibit build-up of the finish on processing rolls, and result in treated Spandex fibers having desirable ''''hand.
