This application refers to an industrial production process to split free fatty acids from glycerol by hydrolysis of the glyceryl esters of vegetable oils at an approximate temperature of 60° C., at atmospheric pressure, in a column packed with calcium and magnesium oxide (CaO.MgO) stones, 1/15 of the column diameter as heterogeneous catalyst. The vegetable oil is emulsionated very finely with water at 60° C. and is poured at the top of the column packed with the stones of heterogeneous catalyst. The oil flows through the catalyst stones down into the column, splitting by hydrolysis the molecules of glyceryl esters and separating the fatty acids from the trialcohol (glycerol—C3H5 (OH)3). Both products are collected at the bottom of the column and separated by density difference. The fatty acids obtained have many industrial uses mostly for the production of toilet soap.

The present invention provides a method for producing a fatty acid monoester product by reacting an animal oil and/or a vegetable oil with an alcohol in the presence of a sulfonic acid group-introduced amorphous carbon catalyst and water. By this method, the production of a fatty acid monoglyceride, which is difficult to separate from the fatty acid monoester, can be suppressed, and the fatty acid monoester can be efficiently produced.Also, the present invention provides a method for producing a fatty acid monoester product by performing the transesterification reaction of an animal oil and/or a vegetable oil with an alcohol, or the esterification reaction of a fatty acid with an alcohol, in the presence of a sulfonic acid group-introduced amorphous carbon catalyst washed with water. By this method, the life of the catalyst can be extended, and the production cost can be reduced.

One or more techniques are disclosed for a process of preparing stearic acid from animal and/or plant sources may comprise: 1) deodorizing and distilling a fat; 2) concentrating fatty acids of the fat; and 3) hydrogenating the fatty acid to provide stearic acid. The process may include the use of co-products from plant and/or animal sources. The process may also include distilling the stearic acid to provide palmitic acid and/or fully hydrogenated fatty acid. Tallow fatty acid, vegetable fatty acid, stearic acid, and palmitic acid prepared from the process described are also disclosed.
