    摘要: An ignition switch of an automotive vehicle employs a non-contacting key reader for reading a code on a key when the key is inserted lengthwise into the switch. Such a key reader is either a magnetic one that reads a magnetically coded key or an optical one that reads an optically coded key. A detent mechanism defines successive Accessory and On (Ignition) positions as the key is increasingly inserted. Various branch circuits are switched on to the vehicle's electric power supply at these two positions provided that a valid key has been detected. Full insertion of the key physically pushes a spring-loaded plunger of a mechanical start switch at the inner end of the ignition switch, causing start switch actuation and the engine starter motor to crank the engine, provided that the key is valid. Once the engine starts, the key is released and is returned to the On position.

    摘要: A shift interlock system for preventing the starting of an outboard motor when the motor is in gear, the outboard motor having an engine, a starter housing, a starter pulley enclosed by the housing, and a transmission shift lever having a neutral setting, a reverse setting and a forward setting. The system includes a subhousing secured to the starter housing, a plunger mounted in the subhousing for reciprocal linear movement between a retracted position, and an extended position in which the plunger engages the starter pulley to prevent the rotation of the pulley, the plunger being biased in the extended position, and a cam member disposed in the subhousing to pivot between a neutral position in which the cam member overcomes the biasing force and retracts the plunger, and at least one drive gear position in which the cam member permits the extension of the plunger. Also included is an operating link connected to the transmission lever and to the cam member for selectively positioning the cam member to extend the plunger when the transmission lever is in a forward or reverse setting.

    摘要: An electronic revolution rate limiting apparatus is described which generally comprises a transducer for generating a tachometer signal which is indicative of the revolution rate of the internal combustion engine, a circuit for producing a control signal which is responsive to the tachometer signal and the operation state of the engine and which determines the maximum revolution rate for each of a plurality of operation states, and a switch for interacting with the ignition system of the engine to prevent a sparking voltage from being induced in the ignition system in response to the value of the control signal. When the revolution rate limiting apparatus is employed in a power plant in which the operation states comprise a plurality of drive states (e.g., forward, neutral, reverse), the circuit for producing the control signal is also responsive to which drive state the power plant is in, such that the maximum revolution rate may be individually controlled for each drive state.

    摘要: A safety device for controlling an ignition circuit for an internal combustion engine associated with a transmission coupling the engine to a load comprises a thyristor adapted to permit, upon conduction thereof, the ignition circuit to produce a high voltage to fire a spark plug provided in the engine, a position-responsive switch adapted to permit application of a trigger signal from a power supply to the gate of the thyristor only when the transmission is in neutral, and a capacitor coupled across the gate and cathode of the thyristor to be charged by a voltage drop thereacross and to provide a trigger signal to the gate of the thyristor. Once the capacitor is charged it maintains a condition wherein the thyristor is turned on whenever the thyristor is positively biased even after the transmission is in gear. Thus the safety device disables the ignition circuit to prevent the engine from starting with the transmission in gear, but once the engine is started the transmission can be shifted into gear without disabling the ignition circuit.

    摘要: Disclosed herein is an engine including a timer plate which is operable to concurrently adjust the engine spark and the setting of the engine throttle valve, a rotatable starter mechanism, and a starter interlock for preventing engine starting when the timer plate is at a predetermined advanced speed setting. The starter interlock includes a resilient, unitary blocking element having a cam follower portion and a pawl portion which is movable between a normal nonoperating position and an operating position to prevent rotation of the engine starter mechanism and further includes a projection on the timer plate which is located to selectively engage the blocking element cam follower portion and move the pawl portion to the operating position when the timer plate is moved to the predetermined advanced speed setting.

    摘要: The vapor-sensing protective system of the present invention has a sensing device for fuel vapor which is mounted in an area where a fuel-powered engine is located. That sensing device develops a voltage within a predetermined range whenever it is operative and is properly connected in that system and senses for but does not detect fuel vapor; and that system responds to that voltage to permit starting of that engine. If that sensing device is not operative or is not properly connected in that system, it will be unable to develop a voltage within that predetermined range; and hence that system will prevent starting of that engine. If that sensing device is operative and is properly connected in that system and senses for and detects fuel vapor, it will develop a voltage above that predetermined range; and hence that system will prevent starting of that engine.
