An apparatus and method for thermally tuning an optical amplifier comprises an optical waveguide doped with a fluorescent material, a thermal device for either heating or cooling the optical waveguide, and a pump light for exciting the fluorescent material. The apparatus shapes, shifts, and/or flattens the gain curves of the doped optical amplifier. Thulium doped fiber is cooled to shift the gain curve into the C-band. Erbium doped fiber is heated to flatten the gain curve in the C-band and is cooled to shift the gain curve above the L-band. The apparatus similarly shapes the gain curves of other fluorescent materials. The thermal device comprises three types of optical cooling devices. The apparatus is a component in communications systems, lasers, medical lasers and the like. The method comprises either heating or cooling optical waveguides doped with fluorescent materials to achieve the desired shaping, shifting, and flattening of the gain curves.

A laser device, in particular a semiconductor laser, emitting optical radiation with a defined mode pattern can be produced from a standard Fabry-Perot (FP) laser by post-processing at the wafer level, i.e. before the wafer is separated into individual dies by cleaving/dicing. A sub-cavity is formed within the FP laser cavity. The sub-cavity has a predetermined length and is located between the FP facets. An aperiodic grating composed of a small number of contrast elements, typically less than 10, with predetermined inter-element separations and predetermined spacings relative to the sub-cavity is formed on or in the optical waveguide. The inter-element separations and the spacings relative to the sub-cavity produce a filtering function of the aperiodic grating for optical radiation propagating in the waveguide. The laser device is suitable for telecommunications applications due to its high side-mode-suppression ratio and narrow-linewidth.

A low-cost, high performance cladding-pumped planar waveguide amplifier and fabrication method, for deployment in metro and access networks. The waveguide amplifier has a compact monolithic slab architecture preferably formed by first sandwich bonding an erbium-doped core glass slab between two cladding glass slabs to form a multi-layer planar construction, and then slicing the construction into multiple unit constructions. Using lithographic techniques, a silver stripe is deposited and formed at a top or bottom surface of each unit construction and over a cross section of the bonds. By heating the unit construction in an oven and applying an electric field, the silver stripe is then ion diffused to increase the refractive indices of the core and cladding regions, with the diffusion region of the core forming a single mode waveguide, and the silver diffusion cladding region forming a second larger waveguide amenable to cladding pumping with broad area diodes.

An apparatus for gating an optical signal comprising: an input stage arranged to receive and combine first and second optical control signals (ON, OFF) of first and second wavelengths, and an optical signal (SIGNAL IN) to be gated of a third wavelength. A gain medium is arranged to receive the signals SIGNAL IN, ON and OFF from the input stage. The gain medium (e.g. YAG) comprises a transition metal dopant (e.g. Cr4null) that has an excited state populatable by the first control signal and depopulatable by the second control signal to allow selective amplification of the optical signal to be gated by stimulated emission from the excited state responsive to the control signals. The amplification process has a very fast switch-on time that is several orders of magnitude faster than in prior art devices based on the rare earth dopant Er3null. This allows the apparatus to be used for high-speed optical switching applications, such as routing of data packets in an optical packet switching network. After transmission of the optical signals through the gain medium, an output stage comprising a wavelength selective filter is used to reject the control signals (ON, OFF) but transmit the optical signal for output (SIGNAL OUT) from the apparatus.

An optical device is provided including an optically localising region comprising a first region having a first refractive index and an array of sub-regions having a second refractive index, the sub-regions in the array positioned at each of the vertices of the triangles in a pinwheel tiling structure. Light passing through the optical device is localised by multiple scattering events within the localising region. The localising region is isotropic so that transmission in the same in all directions and strong localisation occurs for a relatively broad band of frequencies. This is beneficial in a number of applications The structure can be easily replicated and that there is always a set minimum spacing between the sub-regions.
