A method of controlling an automatic transmission is provided. The automatic transmission includes a piston having first and second surfaces opposite from each other, friction plates, engaging and disengaging hydraulic pressure chambers for supplying/discharging hydraulic pressure and directing the piston to push the friction plates to be engaged and disengaged, a hydraulic pressure control valve for supplying/discharging hydraulic pressure to/from the chambers, and first and second oil paths communicating the valve with the chambers. The second surface has a larger area for receiving hydraulic pressure than the first surface. The method includes controlling the disengaged friction plates to be engaged by adjusting the hydraulic pressure to a first pressure in a first period in response to a gear shift command and adjusting the hydraulic pressure to a second pressure in a second period. The first pressure is changed depending on a state of the automatic transmission.

A hall effect sensor is installed in the elongate tube and wires connected to the hall effect sensor extend through the tube and connect to a wire interconnect board installed within the sensor housing body. A compression grommet is provided to hold the wire interconnect board within the sensor housing body. Preferably, a second set of wires extend through holes in the compression grommet and connect to the wire interconnect board. The second set of wires can then be connected to a control circuit or other device to read a speed signal from the modular speed sensor.

A pneumatically engageable clutch for coupling a rotating shaft with a rotatable member comprises a compressed air passage in the rotating shaft. The compressed air passage opens in a port in the peripheral surface of the shaft. A stationary casing surrounds the shaft and has an annular chamber adjacent the port, compressed air being supplied to the annular chamber. The annular chamber is sealed by packing rings, such as Simmer rings, made of elastomeric material an engaging the shaft. To reduce the pressure difference across the packing rings, hydraulic pressure is applied to the outsides of the packing rings. Control means keep the hydraulic pressure substantially equal to the compressed air pressure. In one embodiment, the control means comprise a slide valve. In another embodiment, the control means comprise a partially oil-filled closed system which includes chambers axially outside of the packing rings, the compressed air pressure acting statically on the oil level.
