Abstract:
Disclosed are nutritional formulations including predigested fats that can be administered to preterm infants, infants, toddlers, and children for improving tolerance, digestion, and absorption of nutrients and for reducing the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis, colic, and short bowel syndrome. The predigested fats include fatty acid-containing monoglycerides and/or a fatty acid component.
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides a system for inspecting cases of packages having a substance subject to spoilage. An electromagnetic signal (e.g., a terahertz frequency signal) is directed to each package in a case, and an attenuated signal is received and sampled to generate a set of data points corresponding to each package. A peak within each set of data points is detected, and the data points are shifted with respect to time to align the detected peaks with a predetermined time. The sets of shifted data points are compared to a mathematical model to determine whether the substance in the package is spoiled, and a labeling system marks cases containing spoiled substance.
Abstract:
An enteral feeding apparatus has a pump system including a bearing surface, a platen and a retainer mounted on the platen. The retainer has a first engagement member. A feeding set includes a cassette and a lumen attached to the cassette. The lumen has a peristalsis loop for extending around the bearing surface and the cassette has a second engagement member adapted for engagement with the first engagement member of the retainer to thereby secure the cassette to the pump system. The lumen is in tension when the peristalsis loop is extended around the bearing surface and the first and second engagement members are engaged. The second engagement member of the cassette is biased into engagement with the first engagement member of the retainer by the tension on the lumen.
Abstract:
In a method and system for forming tubing to achieve at least one predetermined performance characteristic relating to the flow of a flowable material therethrough, a relationship is determined between at least one material characteristic of the tubing material, at least one operating parameter of the tube forming machine (310), and the at least one predetermined performance characteristic of the tubing. Based on this relationship, at least one operating parameter for operation of the tube forming machine (310) to achieve the at least one predetermined performance characteristic is determined. The at least one operating parameter is input into the tube forming machine (310) and the machine is operated to achieve the at least one predetermined performance characteristic.
Abstract:
Disclosed are nutritional compositions comprising a synergistic combination of cereal beta-glucans, including oat and or barley beta-glucans and Salacia extract, including Salacia oblonga, that are particularly useful in controlling the blood glucose response in a diabetic or other appropriate individual. The nutritional compositions are especially useful when formulated in powder form and then reconstituted with an appropriate liquid or sprinkled onto food during a meal, to thus control the postprandial blood glucose response to that meal.
Abstract:
Embodiments exploit the ability of the organism Bacillus thuringiensis to produce regularly shaped micrometer-sized crystals of Cry insect protoxins. In various embodiments, these crystals are used as a platform to generate various compositions that are useful for numerous applications.
Abstract:
A container (100) for scoopable material including a container body (102) defining a reservoir to hold the scoopable material, a collar (106) attached to the container body, a lid (108) hingedly attached to the collar, and a leveler(114) extending from the underside of the lid.
Abstract:
A method of preparing a protein hydrolysate using extrusion technology is provided. An intact protein source and a protease component are added to an extruder and mixed therein to form a slurry including a protein hydrolysate having a degree of hydrolysis of 5% to 30%. The slurry has a total protein content of at least 30% based on the weight of solids in the slurry. A protein hydrolysate accordingly produced is also claimed.
Abstract:
Infant formulas that include at least one human milk oligosaccharide selected from 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) and lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA), where the AA and DHA are present in an n-6/n-3 ratio of between 1 and 1.8, at least 30 mg/L of nucleotides, where the nucleotides include inosine monophosphate, and at least 30 µg/L of lutein are disclosed. Also provided are methods of use of the infant formulas for improving at least one of cognition, learning, and memory in an infant. The methods include administering the infant formulas to an infant.
Abstract:
Infant formulas that include a combination of RRR-alpha-tocopherol, 2'-fucosyllactose, and at least one probiotic from the Lactobacillus or the Bifidobacterium genera are disclosed. Also provided are methods of use of the infant formulas for improving at least one of cognition, learning, and memory in an infant. The methods include administering the infant formulas to an infant.
