Abstract: Detection cartridges and associated components, as well as methods of using the same that provide sample materials to a sensor for detection are disclosed. Among the components that may be used in connection with the detection cartridges of the present invention are, e.g., input modules, fluid flow front control features, and volumetric flow rate control features. The modules may include one or more chambers containing different constituents for mixing and/or delivery into a detection cartridge.

Abstract: A medical device (20) is provided that is suitable for use in the delivery of active component into or through the skin. The medical device comprises: an extension member (22) having a first major surface (24) and a second major surface (26), the first major surface comprising a first portion and a second portion; an array retaining member (28) extending from the first portion of the first major surface of the extension member, the array retaining member comprising an array surface (30) having at least one microneedle (32) extending from the array surface; and pressure sensitive adhesive (34) disposed on the second portion of the first major surface of the extension member to facilitate the adhesive attachment of the device to mammalian skin when the at least one microneedle is inserted through the stratum corneum.

Abstract: Detection systems and methods for detecting target biological analytes within sample material using acousto-mechanical energy generated by a sensor are disclosed. The acousto-mechanical energy may be provided using an acousto-mechanical sensor, e.g ., a surface acoustic wave sensor such as, e.g ., a shear horizontal surface acoustic wave sensor ( e.g ., a LSH-SAW sensor). A variety of techniques for modifying the effective mass of the target biological analytes in sample material are disclosed, including fractionating or disassembling the target biological analytes in the sample material ( e.g ., lysing the target biological analyte), adding a detectable mass to the target biological analyte or enhancing coupling of the target biological analyte ( e.g ., through the use of magnetic particles), exposing the sample material to a reagent that causes a change in at least detectable physical property in the sample material if the target biological analyte is present ( e.g ., a change in viscous, elastic, and/or viscoelastic properties), etc.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a moldable microneedle array (54) is described comprising providing a negative mold insert (44) characterized by a negative image of microneedle topography wherein at least one negative image of a microneedle is characterized by an aspect ratio of between about 2 to 1 and about 5 to 1. The negative mold insert (44) is used to define a structured surface of a negative mold cavity (42). Molten plastic material is injected into the heated negative mold cavity. The molten plastic material is subsequently cooled and detached from the mold insert to provide a molded microneedle array (54). One manner of using microneedle arrays of the present invention is in methods involving the penetration of skin to deliver medicaments or other substances and/or extract blood or tissue through the skin.

Abstract: A medical device is described, comprising an array (10) comprising microstructures (12) configured to penetrate the stratum corneum upon impact, and a connection member (20) affixed to the array in a one piece construction, the connection member configured to reversibly connect the medical device to an applicator. Abstract: The invention is directed to a surface acoustic wave sensor assembly that makes use of a Z-axis conductive layer, such as a Z-axis conductive elastomer, or the like. In particular, a Z-axis conductive elastomer couples a circuit layer to a surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor in order to form a SAW sensor assembly. For example, a plurality of electrical contacts of the circuit layer can be coupled to a plurality of electrodes of the SAW sensor via the Z-axis conductive elastomer. The Z-axis conductive elastomer provides electrical coupling between the electrical contacts and the electrodes, and also forms a hermetic barrier between the circuit layer and the SAW sensor. In addition, elastic properties of the Z-axis conductive elastomer may reduce pressure exerted on the SAW sensor during use.
