The present invention provides convergent processes for preparing (-)-beta-elemene, (-)-beta-elemenal, (-)-beta-elemenol, and (-)-beta-elemene fluoride and analogues thereof. Also provided are intermediates useful for preparing (-)-beta-elemene. The present invention further provides novel compositions based on analogues of (-)-beta-elemene, (-)-beta-elemenal, (-)-beta-elemenol, (-)-beta-elemene fluoride and methods for the treatment of cancer, such as brain tumor, lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric intestional cancer, and stomach cancer. The inventors propose a combination therapy using 1) one or more of the following anti-cancer agents: including, but not limited to, Cisplatin, 5-FU, Taxol, Taxol derivatives, and any anti-cancer agent, and 2) one or more of the following (-)-beta-elemene and its analogs, including (-)-beta-elemene, (-)-beta-elemenol, (-)-beta-elemenol, (-)-beta-elemene fluoride, and their analogs, and (-)-beta-elemene's intermediate in its chemical synthesis, for the treatment of cancer, especially for the treatment of brain tumor, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, bladder cancer, cervical cancer,. colon cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer.

Disclosed herein is a process for making 1,2,4-trivinylcyclohexane that is enriched in a particular geometric isomer. The process involves the thermal isomerization of 1,5,9- cyclododecatriene at temperature between 400°C and 600°C followed by an equilibration of the resultant intermediate in either the gas phase or liquid phase at temperature between 180°C and 375°C and at pressures ranging from 0.101 kPa to 1,013 kPa. Also disclosed are 1,2,4-trivinylcyclohexane compositions that are enriched in a particular geometric isomer.

In a dehydrogenation process a hydrocarbon stream comprising at least one non-aromatic six-membered ring compound and at least one five-membered ring compound is contacted with a dehydrogenation catalyst produced by a method comprising treating the support with a liquid composition comprising the dehydrogenation component or a precursor thereof and at least one organic dispersant selected from an amino alcohol and an amino acid. The contacting is conducted under conditions effective to convert at least a portion of the at least one non-aromatic six-membered ring compound in the hydrocarbon stream to benzene and to convert at least a portion of the at least one five-membered ring compound in the hydrocarbon stream to paraffins.
