The present invention discloses the reactivity of ponytail ("PT") sulfonates as leaving groups in nucleophilic fluorination reactions. The results showed that using a pentafluorobenzenesulfonate precursor is a suitable leaving group for n. c. a. nucleophilic 18 F-fluorination in synthesis of [ 18 F]fluoromethyl benzene, wherein this is a suitable leaving group for 18F-labeling with moderate reactivity. The PT-precursor seems to be quite stable. In an attempt to purify the crude 18F-labeled product using fluorous solid phase extraction (F-SPE), the radio labeled impurities decreased significantly. This provides an opportunity for utilizing PT methodology in both simple and fast purification methods.

A process for the sulfonation of an aromatic compound wherein the aromatic compound and sulfonating agent are admixed in the presence of an ionic liquid is described. The method for the sulfonation of aromatic compounds in (e.g. water stable) ionic liquids offers advantages over conventional sulfonation reactions. These are that no by-products formed, the ionic liquid is not consumed and the sulfonating agent (e.g. SO3) is relatively inexpensive.

A process for the manufacture of a haloaryl compound which comprises contacting a mixture of dihalodiarylsulfone isomers [mixture (M)] with sulfuric acid to provide a mixture of haloarylsulfonic acid isomers [mixture (M1)] and reacting mixture (M1) in the presence of water. The process is independent on the manufacturing process of mixture (M) and is advantageous in that the obtained haloaryl compound can be recycled to the first step of a dihalodiarylsulfone manufacturing process.

A production process by which an onium salt derivative useful as, e.g., an acid generator in resists of the chemical amplification type can be synthesized in high yield. The process comprises reacting an onium salt derivative having a halogen anion or carboxylate anion with a sulfonic ester derivative or phosphoric ester derivative. Thus, an onium sulfonate derivative or onium phosphate derivative is obtained in high yield.
