It is disclosed a process for the production of a cold water soluble powder product containing propionic acid or salt comprising a transformation step to transform a carbon source into a modified carbon source. The step to transform a carbon source into a modified carbon source comprises treating the carbon source with a substance able to degrade the carbon source to glucose. The process also comprises a fermentation step using a fermentation medium comprising the modified carbon source and a concentration step, preferably a fractional crystallization step. Preferably the substance able to degrade the carbon source to glucose is an amylase, more preferably an alfa-amylase or glucoamylase.

Methods are provided for microbial electrosynthesis of H 2 and organic compounds such as methane and acetate. Method of producing mature electrosynthetic microbial populations by continuous culture is also provided. Microbial populations produced in accordance with the embodiments as shown to efficiently synthesize H 2 , methane and acetate in the presence of CO 2 and a voltage potential. The production of biodegradable and renewable plastics from electricity and carbon dioxide is also disclosed.
