The implant (10; 40; 50; 70; 80) is a piece of allogenic bone conforming in size and shape with portions of end plates of a vertebrae. The implant (10; 40; 50; 70; 80) has a wedge-shaped profile to restore disc height and the natural curvature of the spine. The top and bottom surfaces (14; 16) of the implant have a plurality of teeth (12) to resist expulsion and provide initial stability. The implant (10; 40; 50; 70; 80) according to the present invention provides initial stability needed for fusion without stress shielding.

A method of fitting orthopaedic prostheses is disclosed in which a semi-permeable microporous membrane (6, 9) is fitted over an implanted prosthesis (3, 2) so as to cover the junction (8, 10) between the prosthesis and the bone (11). In this way, particles generated by mechanical wear of the prosthesis (3, 2) are excluded. Such particles are believed to inhibit bone regeneration in the region of the prosthesis (3, 2). In addition, by preventing the ingress of fibrous connective tissue cells, a secondary seal of new bone will form between the membrane and the orginal bone.
