The recessed and protuding portions are provided in the middle section of the respective disc members and each of the two end sections have a narrowing taper (24,26) towards the ends of the disc members. In addition the prosthesis includes a further pair of disc members (4',6') and may form a system with a facet joint replacement prosthesis (192,202).

The aim of the invention is to achieve an introduction of force which is as homogeneous as possible from the carrier plates into the adjacent vertebral bodies. To this end, the convex articulated surface in the central region of the carrier plate extends on both sides of the central line of the carrier plate between the front edge (17) and the rear edge (16), approximately at the same distance, and projects further from the carrier plate on the end thereof facing the rear edge than on the end thereof facing the front edge.
