The method comprises obtaining information regarding a power consumption of the modem as a function of time (the information being provided by the modem during wireless communication), forming power consumption statistics from the obtained information (wherein the power consumption statistics comprise an average power consumption during wireless communication as a function of one or more time parameters), and controlling use of the modem by one or more applications of the wireless communication device based on the power consumption statistics. The method comprises a UE determining a traffic indicator and transmitting the traffic indicator to a base station. In one embodiment, the traffic indicator indicates either that default power consumption is preferred or low power consumption is preferred. For example, when the UE is in background traffic or sparse traffic, low power consumption is preferred. In another embodiment, the traffic indicator indicates a time pattern of the traffic history. From the network perspective, upon receiving and evaluating information contained in the traffic indicator, the network triggers a QoS modification procedure by applying one or more QoS modification algorithms.
