Abstract: Provided are acoustic articles, and related methods, that include a porous layer and heterogeneous filler received in the porous layer. The heterogeneous filler can include clay, diatomaceous earth, graphite, glass bubbles, polymeric filler, non-layered silicate, plant-based filler, or a combination thereof, and can have a median particle size of from 1 micrometer to 1000 micrometers and a specific surface area of from 0.1 m2/g to 800 m2/g. The acoustic article can have an overall flow resistance of from 100 MKS Rayls to 8000 MKS Rayls. The acoustic articles can serve as acoustic absorbers, vibration dampers, and/or acoustic and thermal insulators.

Abstract: A sample collection system includes a housing comprising a first part and a second part, the first and second parts being movable relative to one another; porous sample collection media disposed along an airflow path in the first part; and an assay disposed on the second part and constructed to receive a sample captured by the porous sample collection media. The first and second parts may be slidably movable relative to one another. The first and second parts may be rotatably movable relative to one another. Moving the first and second parts relative to one another aligns the porous sample collection media with at least a portion of the assay. The assay may be a lateral flow assay or a vertical flow assay. The media is constructed to collect a sample from exhalation airflow. A collected sample may be eluted from the media onto the assay using a liquid.

Abstract: A composite fabric includes a nonwoven fabric layer having non-bonded areas and a structured film layer discontinuously bonded to the nonwoven fabric layer. The discontinuously bonded nonwoven fabric layer and the structured film layer share an overlapping area with at least one set of coincident bond sites. The discontinuously bonded nonwoven fabric does not have another bonding pattern in the overlapping area distinct from the at least one set of coincident bond sites. A method of forming a composite fabric is also described. The method includes forming a fiber layer including a mat of at least partially unconsolidated fibers, positioning a structured film layer and the fiber layer such that they overlap, and discontinuously bonding the mat into a discontinuously bonded nonwoven fabric while simultaneously bonding the structured film layer to the nonwoven fabric layer. An apparatus for forming a composite fabric is also described.

Abstract: A non woven web including a multiplicity of non-respirable, polycrystalline, aluminosilicate ceramic filaments entangled to form a cohesive mat, the polycrystalline, aluminosilicate ceramic filaments having an average mullite percent of at least 75 wt %. The cohesive mat preferably exhibits a compression resilience after 1,000 cycles at 900° C. when measured according to the Fatigue Test, of at least 30 kPa. Insulation articles including the cohesive mats or formed by chopping the ceramic mats into ceramic fibers, pollution control devices including the insulation articles, and methods of making the non-respirable, polycrystalline, aluminosilicate ceramic filaments and fibers, nonwoven webs, insulation articles, and pollution control devices, are also described.

Abstract: Nonwoven webs including one or more semi-continuous filaments made of a mixture including from about 50% w/w to about 99% w/w of at least one crystalline polyolefin (co)polymer, and from about 1% w/w to about 40% w/w of at least one hydrocarbon tackifier resin. The at least one semi-continuous filament exhibits molecular orientation, and at least one of the crystalline polyolefin (co)polymer or the nonwoven web exhibits a Heat of Fusion measured using Differential Scanning Calorimetry of greater than 50 Joules/g. A process for making the semi-continuous filaments and nonwoven webs is also disclosed.

Abstract: A flat-fold respirator is made from a stiff filtration panel joined to the remainder of the respirator through at least one line of demarcation. The panel contains a porous monocomponent monolayer nonwoven web that contains charged intermingled continuous monocomponent polymeric fibers of the same polymeric composition and that has sufficient basis weight or inter-fiber bonding so that the web exhibits a Gurley Stiffness greater than 200 mg and the respirator exhibits less than 20 mm H2O pressure drop. The respirator may be formed without requiring additional stiffening layers, bicomponent fibers, or other reinforcement and can be flat-folded for storage. Scrap from the manufacturing process may be recycled to make additional stiff filtration panel web.
