Abstract: Provided are acoustic articles, and related methods, that include a porous layer and heterogeneous filler received in the porous layer. The heterogeneous filler can include clay, diatomaceous earth, graphite, glass bubbles, polymeric filler, non-layered silicate, plant-based filler, or a combination thereof, and can have a median particle size of from 1 micrometer to 1000 micrometers and a specific surface area of from 0.1 m2/g to 800 m2/g. The acoustic article can have an overall flow resistance of from 100 MKS Rayls to 8000 MKS Rayls. The acoustic articles can serve as acoustic absorbers, vibration dampers, and/or acoustic and thermal insulators.

Abstract: Polymeric sorbents for carbon dioxide are provided. More particularly, the polymeric sorbents are a reaction product of a divinylbenzene/maleic anhydride precursor polymeric material with a nitrogen-containing compound. The nitrogen-containing compound is covalently attached to the polymeric sorbents. Additionally, methods of sorbing carbon dioxide on the polymeric sorbents and compositions resulting from sorbing carbon dioxide on the polymeric sorbents are provided. The polymeric sorbents typically are porous and can selectively remove carbon dioxide from other gases such as methane or hydrogen.

Abstract: Composite granules that contain a binder and a polymeric sorbent material for capturing aldehydes such as formaldehyde are provided. Additionally, methods of making the composite granules, methods of using the composite granules to capture aldehydes, and compositions formed by reacting the composite granules with aldehydes are provided. The polymeric sorbent material included in the composite granules is a reaction product of a divinylbenzene/maleic anhydride precursor polymeric material with a nitrogen-containing compound. This reaction results in the formation of nitrogen-containing groups that are covalently attached to the polymeric sorbent. Aldehydes can react with the nitrogen-containing groups.

The nitrogen-containing compound is covalently attached to the resulting polymeric sorbent. Additionally, methods of sorbing aldehydes (i.e., aldehydes that are volatile under use conditions) on the polymeric sorbents and compositions resulting from the sorption of aldehydes on the polymeric sorbents are provided. The polymeric sorbents typically are porous with the pores often being in the size range of mesopores and/or micropores.

Abstract: A compound represented by formula: and a treated filler having the compound on at least a portion of its surface. R is hydrogen or alkyl. X is alkylene, arylalkylene, or alkylarylene, each optionally interrupted by at least one of an ether, thioether, amine, amide, ester, thioester, carbonate, thiocarbonate, carbamate, thiocarbamate, urea, or thiourea, with alkylene optionally interrupted by arylene. W is hydroxyl, a sulfonic acid group, a phosphonic acid group, carboxylic acid group, —NHR1, epoxy, or —Si(Y)x(Z)3-x. Y is alkyl, aryl, arylalkylenyl, or alkylarylenyl. Z is halide, hydroxyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, acyloxy, polyalkyleneoxy, —O— covalently bonded to the surface of the filler, or —O bonded to another silicon atom, and x is 0 or 1. A composition including the treated filler, a method of making the treated filler, and a method of determining the degree of cure of a curable polymeric resin are also disclosed.

The polymeric materials are divinylbenzene/maleic anhydride polymers, partially hydrolyzed divinylbenzene/maleic anhydride polymers, or fully hydrolyzed divinylbenzene/maleic anhydride polymers. Additionally, methods of making the metal-containing polymeric materials, methods of using the metal-containing polymeric materials to capture volatile, basic, nitrogen-containing compounds, and methods of using a zinc-containing polymeric material to detect the presence of water vapor are provided.

Abstract: Sulfonyl-containing polymeric materials and methods of making these materials are provided. More specifically, the sulfonyl-containing polymeric materials are prepared by treating a precursor polymeric material with a sulfonyl-containing compound. The precursor polymeric material is formed from a polymerizable composition that contains a free-radically polymerizable spirobisindane monomer. The sulfonyl-containing polymeric material is porous. The size of the pores can be in the microporous region, mesoporous region, or both depending on the particular monomers and reaction conditions used to form the precursor polymeric material.
