Abstract: A coating system for a surface of a superalloy component is provided. The coating system includes a MCrAlY coating on the surface of the superalloy component, where M is Ni, Fe, Co, or a combination thereof. The MCrAlY coating generally has a higher chromium content than the superalloy component. The MCrAlY coating also includes a platinum-group metal aluminide diffusion layer. The MCrAlY coating includes Re, Ta, or a mixture thereof. Methods are also provided for forming a coating system on a surface of a superalloy component.

Abstract: A heat shield for a combustor of a gas turbine engine. The heat shield includes an annular ring having an axial direction, a radial direction, and a circumferential direction. The annular ring includes a plurality of circumferential segments. Each circumferential segment of the plurality of circumferential segments is disconnected from an adjacent circumferential segment of the plurality of circumferential segments to allow for thermal growth of each circumferential segment during operation of the combustor.

The method can include introducing the component into a coating chamber, where a first ceramic source material and a second ceramic source material are positioned within the coating chamber of a physical vapor deposition apparatus. An energy source is directed onto the first ceramic source material to vaporize the first ceramic source material to deposit a first layer on the component. The energy source is alternated between the first ceramic source material and the second ceramic source material to form a blended layer on the first layer.

The method can include introducing the component into a coating chamber, where a first ceramic source material and a second ceramic source material are positioned within the coating chamber of a physical vapor deposition apparatus. Abstract: A coated component is generally provided, along with methods of forming such a coating system. The coated component includes a substrate having a surface with a coating system thereon. The coating system may include a columnar thermal barrier coating (TBC) over the surface of the substrate, with the columnar TBC including surface-connected voids. An intermediate layer is over the columnar TBC layer. The intermediate layer has a surface opposite of the columnar TBC that is rougher than the surface of the columnar TBC. A second TBC is over the intermediate layer.

Abstract: A coating system disposed on a surface of a substrate is provided. The coating system may include a bond coating layer on the surface of the substrate, a dense TBC layer on the bond coating layer, and a columnar TBC layer on the dense TBC layer, with the columnar TBC layer defines a plurality of elongated surface-connected voids. The dense TBC layer generally includes a ceramic material and has a porosity of about 15% or less. A method is also provided for forming a coating system on a surface of a substrate.
