Abstract: A device for electrically connecting a direct current (DC) microgrid to a DC bus of an electrical power network, which is operating at a higher voltage than the microgrid, comprises a pair of electrical port each configured for connection with either the DC bus or the microgrid; a DC-DC power converter operatively interconnecting the electrical ports for power transmission therebetween from a first voltage at the port connected to the DC bus to a lower second voltage at the port connected to the DC microgrid; a DC circuit breaker connected between the DC-DC power converter and one of the electrical ports for selectively conducting current therebetween; and a controller which is configured to communicate with constituent devices in the DC microgrid as well as a control center representative of the electrical power network in order to exchange information about electrical energy consumption in the DC microgrid and the larger network.

Abstract: A variable split displacement ratio axial piston machine, featuring a rotatable driveshaft, a tapered swashplate disposed around said rotatable driveshaft, a first working section disposed on a first side of the tapered swashplate, and a second working section disposed on a second side of the tapered swashplate. Each working section includes a respective set of pistons slidably received in a respective set of cylinder bores to draw and expel fluid into and from said cylinder bores. The first and second working sections respectively interface with first and second outer faces of the tapered swashplate in respective first and second facial planes. Tiltable adjustment of a working position of the tapered swashplate is operable to adjust respective orientations of the facial planes, which dictate relative piston stroke lengths of the piston sets. Such tiltable adjustment imparts control over a variable split displacement ratio between the working sections.

Abstract: An enzymatic method is provided for restructuring an affinity ligand bound heterogenous glycoform antibody sample to a substantially homogenous single desired glycoform antibody sample for therapeutic uses and kits for performing the methods. A method for enzymatically altering the Fc region of an affinity ligand bound antibody from a heterogenous glycoform to a substantially homogenous single glycoform comprises: contacting the affinity ligand bound heterogeneous glycoform antibody with a reaction buffer designed for a particular glycoform modification for a time sufficient and under conditions to modify the glycoform of the Fc region to a substantially homogeneous single form; optionally adding one or more nucleotide sugars and/or cofactors; and releasing the substantially homogeneous single glycoform antibody sample from said affinity ligand. The invention also encompasses biopharmaceuticals comprising single glycoform mAbs and polyclonal antibodies enzymatically produced for the treatment of cancers and immune disorders as well as compositions comprising the single glycoform antibodies as a biopharmaceutical.

Abstract: Some embodiments of the present disclosure relate to polymerizable compounds that comprise biocidal activity and/or the potential for increased biocidal activity and that comprise at least one hydrophobic portion and at least one hydrophilic portion. Together the hydrophobic portion and the hydrophilic portion of the compounds may provide the polymerizable compounds with one or more surfactant-like properties. The polymerizable compounds can be incorporated into polymer coating formulations. The polymer coating formulations can be used to coat one or more surfaces of a substrate. The coating formulation can provide biocidal activity and/or the potential for increased biocidal activity to the coated substrate-surface.

Abstract: A two-part aortic annular support system for supporting an aortic annulus during aortic valve repair procedures for prevention of further annular dilation. The first part comprises a composite annular ring that is positionable from within an aortic valve into the left ventricular outflow tract at the level of annular plane. The composite ring comprises a semi-rigid section and a resiliently deformable section. The semi-rigid section is shorter in length than the deformable section. The deformable section is extendible into a commissure of the aortic valve. The second part is a resilient band that is positionable external to the aortic root. The resilient band is securable to the composite ring through the aortic annulus by suturing. The present disclosure also relates to a use of the aortic annular support system and a method of inserting and securing the aortic annular support system during a surgical intervention.

Abstract: An ultrasonic sensing technique and a signal interpretation method based on a spectral element multiphase poromechanical approach overcomes critical gaps in permafrost, frozen soil, and saturated soil characterization. Ultrasonic sensing produces high-quality response signals that are sensitive to the soil properties. A transfer function denoting a ratio of induced displacement and applied force in the frequency domain, is independent of the distribution of the stress force applied by the transducer to the sample, and allows interpretation of the measured electrical signal using a theoretical transfer function relation to efficiently determine the most probable properties from response signals using an inverse spectral element multiphase poromechanical approach. This ultrasonic sensing technique enables rapid characterization of soil samples in terms of both physical and mechanical properties. The Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) system can be used in a laboratory setup or brought on site for in-situ investigation of permafrost, frozen, and saturated soil samples.

Abstract: Disclosed is an olfaction system based on integration of gas sensitive conducting polymers and Floating Gate Metal Oxide Semiconductor (FGMOS) sensors. A sensing polymer, polypyrrole for example, is electrochemically deposited onto sensor pads which are electrically connected to floating gate of the sensor. The response of these sensing polymers to any vapour analyte can be tailored using several techniques that include the use of different dopants, changing electrolyte concentrations or varying growth potential at the time of electrodeposition. Using an array of floating gate sensors, coupled to these chemically diverse polymers, this system will facilitate a signature-like response from the sensors in the array. Every sensor can be accessed and analysed individually using a specially designed addressing circuit. The response from the sensors is amplified through a trans-impedance amplifier and converted to 8-bit digital data for ease of analyte identification and quantification.

Abstract: A composition for therapy of a peripheral neuropathy disorder in a subject in need thereof. The composition comprises an effective amount of an agent selected from a group consisting of pirenzepine, oxybutynin, muscarinic toxin 7, a muscarinic receptor antagonist, and combinations thereof, and a pharmacologically acceptable carrier and/or an excipient. The composition is useful for therapy of peripheral neuropathies exemplified by peripheral neuropathies induced by systemic diseases, peripheral neuropathies induced by metabolic diseases, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathies, compression-induced peripheral neuropathies, peripheral neuropathies induced by exposure to dichloroacetate, immune-mediated peripheral neuropathies, peripheral neuropathies induced by infections, and genetically acquired peripheral neuropathies.
