Aromatic compounds are alkylated with C.sub.20 -C.sub.1300 olefinic oligomers using an acidic alkylation catalyst to produce alkylated aromatic products, usually alkylaromatic hydrocarbons. The olefinic oligomers used as alkylating agents are prepared from 1-alkene oligomerization in contact with reduced metal oxide catalyst, preferably reduced chromium oxide on a silica support. The alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons retain the unique features of the alkylating olefinic oligomer and exhibit high viscosity index and low pour point. If the alkylation is carried out under certain combinations of conditions, especially using a Lewis acid catalysts such as aluminum trichloride and at higher temperatures, the alkyl portion of the product will undergo isomerization. The alkylaromatic compositions show improved thermal stability and are useful as lubricant basestocks and additives for improved antiwear properties, antioxidant and other properties.

The thermal and oxidative stability of HVI-PAO olefin oligomers is improved by reaction of the oligomerization mixture containing the olefin oligomer, dimer and isomerized but unoligomerized olefin with an aromatic compound such as toluene, xylene or naphthalene. The reaction is carried out in the presence of an acidic catalyst, which may be heterogeneous solid catalyst such as an acidic clay or a crystalline zeolite such as MCM-22, a homogeneous Friedel-Crafts catalyst such as AlCl.sub.3, BF.sub.3 or their complexes or a supported catalyst such as AlCl.sub.3 on graphite or silica. The reaction improves the yield and thermal stability of the lube range products. The olefinic oligomer mixture which is reacted with the aromatic compound is prepared from 1-alkene oligomerization in contact with a reduced metal oxide, preferably reduced chromium oxide, catalyst on support such as silica.

Alkylaromatic lubricant products are produced by the reaction of a long chain alkyne such as octyne, decyne or dodecyne over a reduced Group VIB metal oxide catalyst, preferably reduced chromium on silica. The products, which are predominantly n-alkyl substituted, possess excellent thermal and oxidative stability and may be used as lubricant base stocks and viscosity improvers.

A process for producing liquid oligomers useful as lubricants from alpha-olefins feedstock, such as 1-decene. The olefins are oligomerized over a supported and reduced metal oxide catalyst from Group VIB of the Periodic Table to produce the oligomers. The chromium-on-silica oligomerization catalysts can be regenerated to allow repeated recycling of the catalyst with reduced losses in yield of the lubricant. The regeneration process is particularly useful to regenerate catalyst deactivated during the course of oligomerization at high temperatures to produce low viscosity HVI-PAO lubricant. The regeneration process is carried out by (i) purging the deactivated catalyst with inert gas to strip unreacted olefin and lubricant product; (ii) contacting the purged catalyst with a stream of oxidizing gas at an elevated temperature to oxidize the carbonaceous deposits; and (iii) cooling the catalyst and contacting it with a stream of reducing gas to reduce the metal component to a lower valence state.

Novel lubricant compositions comprising polyalphaolefins are disclosed having high viscosity indices with low pour point. The compositions are characterized by a uniform molecular structure with low branch ratios. The invention describes a liquid lubricant composition comprising C.sub.30 -C.sub.1300 hydrocarbons, said composition having a branch ratio of less than 0.19, weight average molecular weight between 300 and 45,000 number average molecular weight between 300 and 18,000, molecular weight distribution between 1 an 5 and pour point below -15.degree. C. 1-decene trimer comprising 9-methyl, 11-octylheneicosane and 11-octyldocosane is disclosed.

Modified zeolite catalyst compositions comprising a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having pore windows formed by 8-membered rings of oxygen atoms, e.g. ZSM-34, in combination with a magnesium oxide, manganese oxide or magnesium oxide/platinum oxide catalyst modifier. Such modified zeolite catalysts are especially useful for converting methanol and/or methyl ester to an olefin-containing hydrocarbon product enriched in ethylene and propylene with enhanced catalyst lifetime.

The meta isomer content of ethyl toluene or methyl styrene isomer mixtures containing predominately meta isomer and para isomer is increased by subjecting the mixture to oxidation with an oxygen containing gas, e.g. air in the presence of a zeolite modified with a transition metal oxidation catalyst, e.g. Co or Cu ZSM-5. The para isomer is selectively oxidized and the meta isomer is easily separated from the product to give isomer mixtures containing greater than 90 percent meta from mixtures containing 60-65 percent meta and not separable by conventional means.
