An improved process for the sulfonation of an unsaturated elastomeric polymer to form a sulfonated elastomeric polymer, wherein a cement which contains an elastomeric polymer dissolved in a nonreactive solvent is contacted with a sulfonating agent at between about -100.degree. C. and +100.degree. C. for a period of time sufficient to result in sulfonation of the elastomeric polymer wherein the improvement includes the use of a sulfonating agent which is formed from mixtures of acyl sulfate ##STR1## with carboxylic acid anhydrides ##STR2## with carboxylic acid halides ##STR3## or with both, wherein R is selected from the group consisting of CH.sub.3 --, C.sub.2 H.sub.5 --, C.sub.3 H.sub.7 --, C.sub.4 H.sub.9 --, C.sub.5 H.sub.11, C.sub.6 H.sub.13 or C.sub.6 H.sub.5 and mixtures thereof. This invention relates to a novel elastomeric foamed material which has been found to exhibit a variety of unusual and desirable features both in its physical properties and in its process of manufacture. These foamed compositions of a lightly sulfonated elastomeric gum contain a non-volatile polar plasticizer and preferably extenders such as oil and fillers. These elastomer foams exhibit an unusual profile of physical properties including extremely rapid production, melt reprocessability of fabricated articles, a novel memory characteristic, and high temperature reshaping of foamed objects while maintaining a good foam structure. These novel foams can be manufactured with relatively uniform cell structures and with small cell sizes at foam densities from near bulk density to less than 0.1g/cc.

The present invention relates to a process for improving the melt processability and properties of metal neutralized sulfonated polymers by the use of a reactive plasticizer wherein the plasticizer improves the flow of the ionic polymer during processing, and subsequently is polymerized by a free radical process into a thermoset polymer. The resultant composition is an intimate blend of ionic polymer with a thermoset polymer, wherein the resultant composition has improved properties.

The instant invention relates to compositions comprising a copolymer of sulfur dioxide and one or more olefins in combination with a hydrocarbon oil which is a mixture of paraffinic, aromatic and naphthenic hydrocarbons having a solubility parameter of about 7 to about 8.5. The olefins are alpha olefins, at least one having a carbon number of 20 or more, more preferably a carbon number of from 20 to 40. The copolymers useful in preparing the compositions of the instant invention are crystalline solids, which are combined with a sufficient amount, preferably from about 5 to 24 pph, of the hydrocarbon oil to yield flexible materials. The above compositions are useful as coatings.

This invention relates to novel foamed polymeric products which are prepared by foaming an ionic polymer in the presence of a volatile polar compound which acts as a plasticizer for the ionic groups present in said ionic polymer. The ionic polymer comprises from about 0.4 to 10 mole % pendant acid groups, especially sulfonic acid groups which have been neutralized to a degree of at least 97%, preferably 100%. In a most preferred embodiment of the instant invention, the foamed polymeric product is prepared from a sulfonated polystyrene polymer. This high strength, low density foam of the instant invention can be reprocessed by admixing with a low boiling solvent for the sulfonate groups, e.g., methanol, and repeating the above foaming process.

The instant invention relates to novel block copolymers containing olefin sulfur-dioxide segments and a process for their preparation. The olefin of choice is a "strained" olefin thus capable of reaction with SO.sub.2 in the presence of radicals at very high rates. Examples of strained olefins include cyclopropene, cyclobutene, norbornene, and the derivatives thereof. The novel block copolymers are prepared by contacting the olefin and the sulfur dioxide with a polymer under conditions of shearing degradation whereby said polymer is broken down into radical-containing segments which subsequently combine with the olefin and sulfur dioxide to form the novel copolymers described above. The polymer may be selected from the group consisting of polyisobutylene, poly(ethylene oxide), ethylene-propylene copolymers, poly(propylene oxide), polybutadiene, polyisoprene, etc. A novel block polymer formed by this preferred process shows improved properties as compared to physical mixtures of said polymer and olefin-sulfur dioxide copolymers. For example, the novel polymers formed by the preferred process of the instant invention show higher moduli and may be plasticized to higher levels while retaining good physical properties.

The Mannich Base condensates of this invention are useful as dispersants.

The novel polymers of the present invention are prepared by graft polymerization of at least one aromatic nitrogen-containing monomer onto an amino-substituted polymer (e.g., an ethylene alpha-olefin interpolymer substituted by primary amino or secondary amino groups). Preferred aromatic nitrogen-containing moieties are illustrated by aniline, and preferred amino-substituted interpolymers comprise amino-substituted ethylene propylene norbornene terpolymers. The polymers of this invention are oil soluble and are useful as dispersant and antioxidant additives in oleaginous compositions and are further useful in electrical, textile and other applications.
