In a jointly encoded (JE), spread spectrum communication MIMO system where a demultiplexed packet is transmitted over multiple streams, two versions of a single channel quality indicator (CQI) is disclosed: generalized SNR or constrained mutual information CMI between the transmitted and received chip vectors. In the receiver, the CMI is constrained so that filtering is suboptimal. The filter bank is preferably LMMSE or MVDR filters that convert the multi-path channel into a single path channel so that joint sequence detection is unnecessary. Detection is instead by a per-Walsh code architecture, wherein a plurality of Walsh-code specific detectors in parallel detect bits or symbols from the single-channel chips after downconverting chip to symbols. Link to system mapping is realizable using the disclosed CQI for a JE MIMO system in that the CQI or related information is returned to the transmitter, which adapts coding rate and/or modulation for the channel as represented by the CQI.

Studies in mice and humans indicate that membrane CD14 (mCD14) on the cell surface of monocytes, macrophages, and PMN mediates the activation of these cells by LPS. The soluble CD14 (sCD14) present in the circulation also binds to LPS and blocks LPS binding to mCD14. To determine the role of a recombinant bovine soluble CD14 polypeptide in cellular activation by LPS, a recombinant bovine soluble CD14 polypeptide, rbosCD14, was cloned and expressed in a baculovirus expression system. Results indicated that rbosCD14 inhibited the LPS-induced increase in CD18 expression and TNFα mRNA in vitro and reduced mortality in mice injected with LPS. Further, rbosCD14 sensitized mammary epithelial cells to low concentrations of LPS resulting in recruitment of white blood cells and prevention of LPS-induced infection.

A method and apparatus are provided for polishing a substrate surface. In one aspect, an apparatus for polishing a substrate includes a basin and a polishing head. A carrier is disposed in the basin and has a substrate supporting surface. A retaining ring is disposed on the carrier and at least partially circumscribes the substrate supporting surface. The polishing head is supported above the basin and includes a conductive polishing pad. Embodiments may further include a vent to allow gas to escape through the polishing head. Embodiments may further include an electrolyte supply that flows electrolyte into the polishing head and out through a permeable electrode and the conductive pad to the substrate. Embodiments may also be configured with a polishing head diameter smaller than the substrate supported by the carrier.

A computer system and method provide a CAD tool by which application specific optical integrated circuits may be easily and quickly designed. The computer system has a graphical user interface which provides the designer with an empty canvas upon which the user may place selected icons of any one of a plurality of optical devices. The designer can select from any one of a number of interconnects to place an icon of the selected interconnect between two of the optical devices. The characteristics of each optical device or interconnect may be varied from default settings to a desired group of settings. To verify the operation of a designed circuit, the user simply clicks each icon along an optical path and the computer system provides a spectral analysis of optical power versus wavelength for the defied optical path. The user can also design optical chips by selecting and placing end ports into an optical circuit and can then clump or group the entire optical circuit into a single icon representing the chip. The computer system also provides the designer with the ability to group optical chips together to form wafers. The optical circuits, as well as the chips and wafers, may be designed in any one of several manufacturing standards.

A ballast circuit system provides for efficient starting and operation of high voltage discharge lamps using a common 120 volt AC power source. As a result of this improved ballast circuit system, the necessary high voltage is generated from a normal 120 volt AC in such a way that there is low power loss. The system efficiency allows for use of plastic fixtures and small size packaging of the discharge lamp.
