摘要: A method of preparing a patient's proximal tibia with a surgical saw and cutting instrumentation is disclosed. The method of the present invention prepares the patient's proximal tibial to receive a tibial implant. The patient's intramedullary canal is first reamed and then an intramedullary rod is placed in the intramedullary canal as a reference. A first cutting instrument is bound on the rod above the patient's proximal tibia. The first cutting instrument includes a stylus that is used to set the depth of cut by referencing the top of the proximal tibia. The proximal tibia is then transversely cut with the saw by tracking the first cutting guide surfaces with the saw. The first cutting instrument is removed together with its stylus. A secondary cutting instrument is then placed on the rod above the proximal tibia. The second cutting instrument has a cutter at its center for cutting longitudinally into the proximal tibia. A secondary cut is made on the proximal tibia by tracking the secondary cutting instrument and a guide surface provided on the upper end of the cutters that engage the center of the proximal tibia.

摘要: A tibial prosthesis includes a tibial tray and a post extending therefrom for receiving one or more modular stems of differing sizes. The stem provides a closed socket that registers with the post. A wedge lock fit tightens the stem to the post upon assembly. The stem has a cylindrical section and a tapering section. Fins extend longitudinally from the proximal end to the distal end of the stem, tracking both the cylindrical and tapering portion thereof so that each of the fins tracks a uniform diameter section of the stem for a majority of its length. The tapering section of the stem is equal to about one third of its over all length, and defines the distal end of the stem. The fins are longitudinally placed about the stem exterior surface, and are generally parallel. Between the fins are U-shaped channels that are similarly longitudinally extending and generally parallel. The stem provides a central longitudinal axis. The fins and channels are parallel to the central longitudinal axis of the stem.

摘要: A surgical guide rod holder is provided for holding guide rods, surgical pins, bone pins, trochars and the like during orthopedic surgery procedures. The apparatus has a frame with a handle and a barrel. The barrel has two spaced apart supports that hold the pin or rod. A multi-link assembly is operated by a trigger. The multi-link assembly moves between gripping and releasing positions when the surgeon rotates the trigger. The multi-link assembly includes a link member that presses laterally against the pin or rod during gripping, forcing the pin against the barrel. A turnbuckle adjusts the multi-link assembly to provide greater/lesser "bite" for holding the rod or pin, or for allowing holding of pins of different sizes.

摘要: A method for percutaneous fixation of a pair of vertebrae of a patient, which comprises posterolaterally entering the back of a patient percutaneously with a plurality of pedicle screws, screwing each pedicle screw into the medullary canal of the pedicles of adjacent thoracic and/or lumbar vertebrae or the pedicles of the L5 and S1 vertebrae, to a position where the proximal end thereof lies adjacent the fascia of the patient; inserting pedicle screw linkages under the skin of the back of the patient and detachably securing the linkage means to the proximal ends of the screws on the same side of the spinous processes of the vertebrae to restrict relative movement between the vertebrae. A kit is provided for percutaneous fixation of vertebrae of a patient, comprising a plurality of pedicle screws of different sizes, yet of a size to enable the distal end of each screw to be screwed into the medullary canal of a pedicle of a vertebra with the proximal end thereof lying adjacent the fascia of a patient.

摘要: An orthopedic joint prosthesis includes a prosthesis body with a pair of connectable components each having a connecting portion with a generally frustroconically shaped surface. One of the components has a projecting connecting portion and the other component has a socket connecting portion. The projecting connecting portion has a distal end and a proximal end with a generally circular end face. The void space can also be a socket. The void space defines a means for distributing stress between the proximal and distal end portions after the prosthesis body has been assembled by locking the socket and projecting portions together.

摘要: An in-situ surgical orthopedic milling apparatus includes an instrument frame having upper and lower end portions. A plurality of templates are provided, each forming a respective virtual pattern. A cutting device supported upon the frame cuts bone tissue (e.g., within the intramedullary canal of a patient's bone), by tracking the virtual patterns. A system of vertically stacked templates can be placed in position with respect to the instrument frame to define an operative position. The templates provide a wall portion that constrains movement of the cutting tool beyond a desired surgical cutting area defining an "actual pattern". In this first embodiment, the templates are in the form of stacked templates, each template having its own pattern.

摘要: This invention provides surface hardened, abrasion resistant high strength, biocompatible metal medical implants, in particular, titanium alloy implants which do not include any elements which have been shown or suggested as having short term or long term potential adverse effect from a standpoint of biocompatibility. Further, the invention provides methods of strengthening and hardening the surfaces of other titanium, zirconium, and cobalt-based alloy implants with small concentrations of a metal solute such as zirconium, yttrium, tantalum, aluminum, silicon, chromium, or thorium via internal oxidation or nitridation. Alternatively, nitrogen, oxygen, or carbon can be diffused directly into the surface of the implants by interstitial hardening to further increase the surface abrasion resistance of these internally oxidized or internally nitridized implant metal or metal alloys.

摘要: A modular humeral prosthesis that can be custom fitted to a particular patient by interchanging sizes of the various components by a surgeon interoperatively. The prosthesis features a humeral head having a hemispherically shaped outer surface for placement within the glenoid cavity of a human scapula, the head including on its undersurface a recessed center portion having a first cooperating connecting means. The body has a proximal end and a distal end, with the proximal end including an angled platform having a second cooperating connecting means for engagement with said first connecting means, and the distal end having a third cooperating connecting means. The body also includes a plurality of fins. A cylindrical primary stem has a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end having a forth cooperating connecting means for engagement with said third connecting means, and the distal end having a fifth cooperating connecting means. A cylindrical secondary stem has a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end having a sixth cooperating connecting means for engagement with said fifth connecting means, and the distal end having a tip for insertion within the medullary canal of a resected human humerus.

摘要: The invention provides an interpositional coupler for inserting between modules of a modular medical implant, wherein the modules are fabricated of compositions having different electrochemical potentials, to reduce or prevent the flow of a galvanic current and thereby reducing or preventing this contribution to corrosion of the prosthesis. The coupler may be of an insulative type comprising a zirconium/zirconium alloy core coated with blue-black zirconium oxide or nitride or any metal coated with amorphous diamond-like carbon. Alternatively, the coupler may be of a dual composition type with each of the compositions having essentially the same electrochemical potential as the module to which it couples.
