An implant for a hip or other joint is provided. Briefly stated, an intramedullary stem is provided having flexibility which is comparable to that of the surrounding bone. A bore is disposed in the stem portion with the stem wall thickness uniform or varying from the proximal end to the distal end, depending upon the amount of flexibility desired. This flexibility therefore distributes the loading forces from the joint more uniformly over the supporting cortical bone with the result that bone degeneration from stress shielding is minimized or eliminated.

A joint prosthesis comprising two co-operating prosthesis members fastening each to a different joint bone. At least one of the prosthesis members is formed by at least two prosthesis elements one surrounding the other, the one prosthesis element adjacent the bone being provided with fastening means distributed along the outer face and being located inside the outer face when the joint prosthesis is being applied, out of which outer face they can subsequently be moved in order to cause them to penetrate into the bone.The fastening means are formed by pins guided in passages of the prosthesis element. The tipform of these pins could be chosen in relation to the hardness of the bone to be penetrated.Furthermore, the contact faces of the two prosthesis elements could be provided with coating mimicing the elastic and/or resilient features of bone.

A modular hip stem prosthesis including a hip stem with an integral, enlarged shoulder and a neck section mountable to the hip stem. The integral, enlarged shoulder is designed to closely conform to the metaphyseal region to securely mount the hip stem in the end of the femur. The enlarged, shoulder portion of the hip stem is also selectively configured to be fabricated as a separate element so as to allow one of a plurality of distal stems to be mounted to the enlarged shoulder to create the hip stem. The neck section readily adapts the hip stem prosthesis for repair and replacement of the components of the total hip replacement without requiring replacement of the hip stem.

An artificial stem unit for coxa with a setting guide comprises a stem made of metal to be inserted into the marrow cavity of a femur and a setting guide for fixing the stem in the marrow cavity comprising a cylindrical core rod and a plug attached to the end of the cylindrical core rod. In the operation, the setting guide is inserted into the marrow cavity of the femur in advance for the centering, and thereafter, the stem is inserted so that the through hole of the stem fit with the cylindrical core rod of the setting guide. Then the bone cement is injected to fix the stem at an accurate position set up by the above operation.

An endoprosthesis for the hip joint includes a head portion, or artificial femoral head, and a substantially elbow-shaped member of polyethylene resiliently supporting said head portion. The elbow-shaped member includes a relatively short upper portion and a relatively long lower portion and defines at the junction of these two portions on one side a concave bent and on the other side a convex bent. Each of both portions is provided with an internal channel. One of these channels is substantially coaxial with the upper portion of said elbow-shaped member and has an entrance or opening situated at the convex bent of said elbowshaped member. The other of these channels is substantially coaxial with said lower portion of said elbow-shaped member and has an entrance or opening situated at the upper portion of said elbow-shaped member. The aforementioned channels intersect at an obtuse angle and each of the aforementioned channels receives one of a pair of pins or studs. The upper head portion or artificial femoral head defines a slanting channel into which said upper portion of said elbow-shaped member of polyethylene projects.

A cementless femoral stem prosthesis for use in hip replacement surgery is disclosed. The stem has a collar and a body having a fixed end and a shank end. The shank end is divided into a pair of adjustable endosteal plates that are secured to the cortical bone of the femur by screws. The present invention provides an improved femoral stem structure because the screws through the endosteal plates transfer the load to the cortical bone rather than the cancellous bone, the medial endosteal plate has a plurality of spurs to engage with the cancellous bone to increase the number of stress-strain points, and the collar transfers the load directly to the cortical bone. All of these features work in tandem to reduce the risk of stress shielding, bone resorption, prosthetic loosening, and other difficulties associated with femoral stem prostheses.
