    Abstract: A method, a device, and a non-transitory storage medium provide to store a boot loader that includes a first stage boot loader and a second stage boot loader, and wherein the first stage boot loader is not upgradeable and the second stage boot loader is upgradeable; store a first operating system and a second operating system, wherein the first operating system is a main operating system and the second operating system is an operating system that is executed only when a disaster recovery service is invoked; execute the first stage boot loader during a boot-up of the device; determine whether the disaster recovery service is invoked during the execution of the first stage boot loader; load the second stage boot loader in response to a determination that the disaster recovery service is invoked; and determine whether an upgraded second stage boot loader is stored at the device in response to a determination that the disaster recovery service is not invoked.

    Abstract: Described is a technology by which independent computing functions such as corresponding to separate operating systems may be partitioned into coexisting partitions. A virtual machine manager, or hypervisor, manages the input and output of each partition to operate computer system hardware. One partition may correspond to a special purpose operating system that quickly boots, such as to provide appliance-like behavior, while another partition may correspond to a general purpose operating system that may load while the special purpose operating system is already running. The computer system that contains the partitions may transition functionality and devices from one operating system to the other. The virtual machine manager controls which computer hardware devices are capable of being utilized by which partition at any given time, and may also facilitate inter-partition communication.

    Abstract: The disclosed apparatus may include a storage device that stores an asymmetric key pair including a public encryption key and a private encryption key assigned to a computing device. This apparatus may also include at least one processing unit communicatively coupled to the storage device. The processing unit may encrypt, via one key within the asymmetric key pair, a copy of identification information that identifies the computing device. The processing unit may then maintain the encrypted copy of the identification information and an unencrypted copy of the identification information in connection with the computing device. Next, the processing unit may detect evidence of device tampering in connection with the computing device by (1) decrypting, via another key within the asymmetric key pair, the encrypted copy of the identification information and (2) determining that the decrypted copy of the identification information differs from the unencrypted copy of the identification information.

    Abstract: A user profile layer provides a benefit to a user by allowing access to user profile setting and data across multiple information handling systems running one or more operating systems. Operating system specific data may be stored in a user profile operating system layer while user data may be stored in a user profile data layer. Each time a user logs in to an information handling system, a layering driver captures changes to user data and to user settings corresponding to the operating system. A new user profile operating system layer is created for each type of operating system associated with a user while only one user profile data layer is maintained for the same user. In this way, any changes made to the same operating system data or user data are captured by the user's specific user profile and usable each time the user logs in to any information handling system.
