    摘要: An improved stuffer box used for crimping textile fibers, particularly fibrillated polyolefin films. The width of the stuffer box is related to the linear density of the fiber bundles to be crimped whereby there is one millemeter of width for each fiber bunder size in the range of from about 200 to about 750 denier. Pressure controlled hinged lid or fixed lid exit orifices may be employed. Also employed may be a distributing device for applying additive material to the textile fibers prior to crimping to enhance the crimping operation or to enhance the end use of the crimped fiber or both. Fibrillated polyolefin materials that are crimped in accordance with the invention are adapted for use as filter materials in smoking articles.

    摘要: A composite laminated, non-distortable needlepoint canvas material comprised of a primary layer of non-elastic, open-mesh woven fabric having a uniform weave pattern of mesh apertures and a relatively thin secondary mesh-stabilizing layer of sheer non-elastic fabric material. The threads of the open-mesh primary layer are impregnated and coated with a synthetic resin mesh-stiffening material and are bonded to the sheer secondary layer by the synthetic resin mesh-stiffening material of the primary layer or by a combination of such mesh-stiffening material and an applied synthetic adhesive. The threads of the primary layer are not susceptible to raveling at the edges of the composite needlepoint material. The sheer fabric secondary layer may be a non-woven, semi-transparent, random-spun synthetic fiber material or a sheer closely woven fabric material.

    摘要: An elastomer coated bias fabric for reinforcing power transmission belts and the like is disclosed wherein one surface of the fabric is provided with an uncured, tacky, elastomeric composition. The fabric is prepared by pre-impregnating the fabric, transversely stretching the fabric on a tenter frame, coating a latex composition on both surfaces of the fabric while maintaining the fabric in its transversely stretched condition, and after drying the fabric, overcoating one surface only of the coated fabric with a tackified, latex composition which may contain a chemical linking agent which enhances the bond between the elastomer and the fabric by forming a chemical bridge between them. A method for manufacturing coated fabric is also disclosed.

    摘要: A carbon composite article and the method of making the article wherein selected carbon fibrous materials are formed into a basic starting substrate having a volume greater than the desired volume of the finished article. Very small amounts of a carbonaceous binder material are used to bond the fibrous materials together at a multiplicity of bonding sites. The basic substrate is then subjected to controlled temperatures and pressures to form a shaped substrate characterized by having a high degree of open porosity, a predetermined shape and structural integrity sufficient to withstand subsequent substrate processing. The carbonaceous binder is applied to the fibrous material in a manner whereby substantial encapsulation of the individual fibers is avoided so that the portions of the fibers disposed intermediate the bonding sites are free to move to accommodate and effectively distribute stresses which may be generated within the substrate due to material shrinkage or other process related causes. The shaped substrate is then partially or fully densified in a freestanding configuration by chemical vapor deposition of pyrolytic materials interstitially of the substrate.

    摘要: A substantially light-impervious laminate material is provided. In one embodiment, the material includes a first relatively light-reflective (white) polyvinyl chloride sheet, an open scrim sheet, a second relatively light-reflective (white) polyvinyl chloride sheet, and a relatively light-absorbtive (black) bonding agent permeating the scrim sheet and binding together the first sheet, the second sheet and the scrim sheet. Preferably this bonding agent contains aluminum pigment and carbon black pigment.A method of continuously making this laminate material is also provided. The laminate is made by twice coating the underside of the top laminate sheet with the bonding agent, pressing the scrim sheet against the bonding agent and top sheet underside, stripping the scrim sheet from the top sheet underside, and re-pressing the scrim sheet against the top sheet underside. Next, the top sheet, bonding agent and scrim sheet are heated, and a hot bottom sheet is pressed against the hot scrim sheet. The laminate is then cooled. The finished product can be produced at relatively low cost, yet the occurrence of "pinholes", "slits" and other imperfections is discouraged.
