A method for forming an enlarged diameter aluminum alloy driveshaft tube having an interior reduced diameter portion that avoids clearance issues with respect to other components of the vehicle includes the initial step of providing a tube of aluminum alloy material having a diameter that corresponds to the enlarged diameter of the driveshaft tube to be formed. Then, a determination is made as to whether any component of the vehicle is located sufficiently close to the driveshaft tube to interfere with the rotation thereof during normal operation. If so, the position and axial length of the potential interference is located on the aluminum alloy tube. A diameter reducing process is then performed on the aluminum alloy tube to form the interior reduced diameter portion to eliminate the potential interference. Next, the ends of the enlarged diameter tube may be reduced if desired, such as by swaging, to form the driveshaft tube having the first and second diameter reducing portions at the ends thereof If desired, the step of forming the first and second diameter reducing portions can precede or occur simultaneously with the step of forming the interior reduced diameter portion. To complete the method of this invention, yokes are secured to the reduced diameter end portions of the driveshaft tube, and the driveshaft tube is installed in the drive train system of the vehicle.

The end fitting is held with respect to the driveshaft tube so that an annular gap is formed between the neck and the driveshaft tube. An inductor is provided about the driveshaft tube adjacent the end receiving the neck. The inductor is energized to generate a magnetic field for collapsing the driveshaft tube about the neck at a high velocity so that the driveshaft tube and the end fitting are welded to each other.

The motor generates the torque necessary to drive the driving axle shaft. As known, suspension beams extend transversely to the axis of rotation of the driving axle shaft. The electric motor is pivotally attached to the gear box by means of a flexible coupling and is pivotally attached to the suspension beam by means of a movable connection. The flexible coupling allows the electric motor to pivot relative to the gear box and the movable connection allows the electric motor to pivot relative to the suspension beam as the suspension beam receives road load input.

A gear reduction assembly having directly cooperating gears which serve to rotatably connect an input shaft to an output shaft through an intermediate shaft. The input and output shafts have parallel axes of rotation and extend, respectively, from seals in opposite sides of a housing. The inner ends of the input and output shafts are spaced from one another and are each provided with an identical pinion gear. The intermediate shaft is rotatably carried between the pinion gears and has an axis of rotation positioned at right angles to the axes of rotation of the input and output shafts. A pair of differently sized ring gears having different numbers of teeth are affixed in a back-to-back relationship on the intermediate shaft. The pinion gear on the input shaft engages the relatively smaller ring gear on the intermediate shaft whereas the pinion gear on the output shaft engages the relatively larger ring gear on the intermediate shaft. The gear reduction assembly is utilized in the power train of a vehicle and is positioned between the transmission and propeller shaft to permanently reduce the gear ratio between the engine and one or more drive axles.

The carrier component is preferably formed integrally with supporting arms for the disc brake, fastening sections for the wheel suspension and a lever for the steering, on the one hand, and a radially internal ring of the wheel axle bearing, a shell-shaped part of the constant-velocity joint and the flange for attaching the brake disc are formed integrally with the wheel axle, on the other hand.

The propeller shaft is characterised in that a stud (4) is welded to a cylindrical outer surface of the body (1) so as to project outwardly from that surface. The weight (5) has a hole (8) therethrough and located over the stud (4) so that the stud (4) extends into the hole (8). A terminal end portion (10) of the stud (4) contacts the weight (5) so as to thereby prevent separation of the weight (5) from the stud (4). A method for attaching a balance weight to a propeller shaft is also provided.
