Abstract: The present invention provides a composition comprising 1) an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles having a core-shell morphology wherein the core protuberates from the shell; wherein the core comprises from 5 to 90 weight percent structural units of a fluoroalkylated monomer, and 2) less than 0.09 weight percent structural units of a phosphorus acid monomer; and wherein the shell comprises from 0.1 to 5 weight percent of itaconic acid or a phosphorus acid monomer, based on the weight of the shell. The present invention addresses a need in the art by providing a way of selectively concentrating fluoroalkyl functionality into polymer particles with acorn morphology, thereby providing an improvement in dirt pick-up resistance of the subsequent coating.

Abstract: The present invention is an above-critical coating composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles, pigment particles, and extender particles wherein the polymer particles comprise from 80 to 99.8 weight percent structural units of vinyl acetate and from 0.1 to 6 weight percent structural units of a phosphorus acid monomer. The composition shows surprisingly improved hiding with increased particle size of the polymer particles.

Abstract: The present invention is a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of metal oxide pigment particles coated with a polymer comprising structural units of an alkyltrihydroxysilane or a salt thereof and a dialkyldihydroxysilane or a salt thereof. The composition of the present invention provides hydrophobicity to pigment particles, thereby imparting water resistance, and allows for high loadings of pigment in water without increased viscosity.

Abstract: The present invention provides polymer modified aqueous urea formaldehyde resin (UF resin) binder compositions useful in making a treated glass mat, e.g., for roofing shingles, wherein the polymer modifier is an multistage aqueous emulsion acorn copolymer comprising one protuberant polymer stage containing phosphorous acid groups and one or more other polymer stage comprising an addition copolymer incompatible with the protuberant polymer stage, wherein the multistage aqueous emulsion copolymer has a measured Tg of from −60 to 25° C., or, preferably from −30 to 12° C. and, further wherein the weight ratio of the total of monomers used to make the one or more other polymer stage to the total amount of monomers used to make the protuberant polymer stage ranges from 3:1 to 50:1, or, preferably, from 3:1 to 30:1 or, more preferably, from 3:1 to 20:1, or, even more preferably, from 8:1 to 12:1.

Abstract: The present invention provides stable, quick drying aqueous compositions useful in making traffic markings having excellent low temperature flexibility which comprise (i) one or more vinyl or acrylic emulsion polymers chosen from single stage and multi-stage emulsion polymers, the polymer or at least one stage thereof having both a calculated glass transition temperature (calculated Tg) of from −25 to 0° C., and a calculated Hansch parameter of 1.4 to 2.25, and (iii) one or more fillers, extenders and/or pigments, wherein the composition has a percent pigment volume concentration (% PVC) of from 50 to 80% and, preferably, a volume solids of from 50 to 75%. The compositions may comprise one or more silanes, and one or more polyamines and a volatile base, such as ammonia.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparing an aqueous dispersion of a vinyl acetate polymer comprising the step of polymerizing vinyl acetate under emulsion polymerization conditions in the presence of a chain transfer agent which is a hypophosphite salt or X—R1—SH, where R1 is a C1-C4 alkyl group and X is sulfonate, hydroxyl, sulfate, phosphate, phosphonate, carboxylic acid or a salt thereof, or C1-C3-alkyl carboxylate. The process provides a way of lowering the viscosity of the vinyl acetate polymer at a given solids content.
