Abstract: A novel liquid crystal display device without a decrease in display quality. The liquid crystal display device includes a pixel for displaying a still image at a frame frequency of less than or equal to 1 Hz, and a liquid crystal layer in the pixel has a dielectric constant anisotropy of greater than or equal to 2 and less than or equal to 5. With the above structure, a change in voltage applied to a pixel can be kept within an acceptable range of a deviation in gray level for displaying the same still image. Thus, flickers due to a low refresh rate can be reduced, which leads to an increase in display quality.

A semiconductor device includes a transistor over a substrate, a first light-transmitting conductive film over the substrate, an oxide insulating film covering the transistor and having an opening over the first light-transmitting conductive film, a nitride insulating film over the oxide insulating film and in contact with the first light-transmitting conductive film in the opening, a second light-transmitting conductive film connected to the transistor and having a depressed portion in the opening, and an organic resin film with which the depressed portion of the second light-transmitting conductive film is filled.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device using a liquid crystal exhibiting a blue phase and having a novel structure, and a method for manufacturing the liquid crystal display device. A plurality of structure bodies (also referred to as ribs, protrusions, or projecting portions) are formed over the same substrate, and a pixel electrode and an electrode (a common electrode at a fixed potential) corresponding to the pixel electrode are formed thereover. An electric field is applied to the liquid crystal layer exhibiting a blue phase by using the pixel electrode that has an inclination and the electrode corresponding to the pixel electrode, which also has an inclination. A shorter distance between the adjacent structure bodies allows a strong electric field to be applied to the liquid crystal layer, which results in a reduction in power consumption for driving the liquid crystal.

Abstract: The occurrence of a defective orientation of a polymer/liquid crystal composite is suppressed. In addition, the occurrence of defective display of a liquid crystal display device including the polymer/liquid crystal composite is suppressed. In the polymer/liquid crystal composite exhibiting a blue phase, a plurality of domains are included and defective orientations easily occur at boundaries between the domains. Thus, by lowering orientation periodicities at boundaries between the domains, a defect-free orientation to high orientation periodicities at the boundary between adjacent domains can be obtained. Specifically, the polymer/liquid crystal composite exhibiting the blue phase includes the plurality of domains each of which has a size of 3 μm or less.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device with an increased pixel aperture ratio is provided. A liquid crystal display device that displays an image with high contrast and high luminance is provided. The liquid crystal display device includes a first pixel electrode; a second pixel electrode; a transistor; a capacitor; a first insulating film; a second insulating film; and a third insulating film. The transistor includes a gate electrode; a gate insulating film; a first oxide semiconductor film; and a source electrode and a drain electrode. One of a pair of electrodes of the capacitor includes a second oxide semiconductor film. The first insulating film is provided over the first oxide semiconductor film. The second insulating film is provided over the second oxide semiconductor film such that the second oxide semiconductor film is sandwiched between the first insulating film and the second insulating film. The third insulating film overlaps with an end of the first pixel electrode. The second pixel electrode is provided over the third insulating film.

Abstract: A display device with excellent display quality is provided. The display device includes a transistor over a first substrate, an inorganic insulating film in contact with the transistor, and an organic insulating film in contact with the inorganic insulating film. The transistor includes a gate electrode over the first substrate, an oxide semiconductor film overlapping with the gate electrode, a gate insulating film in contact with one surface of the oxide semiconductor film, and a pair of electrodes in contact with the oxide semiconductor film. The inorganic insulating film is in contact with the other surface of the oxide semiconductor film. The organic insulating film overlaps with the oxide semiconductor film with the inorganic insulating film provided therebetween and is separated. Note that the thickness of the organic insulating film is preferably greater than or equal to 500 nm and less than or equal to 10 μm.

Abstract: A flicker of an FFS liquid crystal display device that is driven at a low refresh rate is reduced. In an FFS liquid crystal display, a pixel electrode and a first common electrode included in a liquid crystal element are formed on an element substrate side, and a second common electrode is formed on another substrate (counter substrate) side. By making the first and second common electrodes have the same potential, generation of a residual DC voltage can be suppressed in a pixel. Thus, even when a refresh rate is lowered, change in transmittance of a pixel can be suppressed in a data retention period, so that a flicker can be reduced.

Abstract: A semiconductor layer of a transistor is formed of an oxide semiconductor film including a crystal part. An organic resin film covering the transistor is formed. By treatment such as drying treatment on the organic resin film in a cell process, variations in the threshold voltage of the oxide semiconductor transistor due to moisture can be suppressed. A common electrode faces a pixel electrode. The common electrode and the pixel electrode are formed over the organic resin film with an insulating film provided therebetween. Therefore, a capacitor can be provided to a liquid crystal element if a pixel does not include a wiring for a storage capacitor. An antistatic electrode is provided on the outer side of a color filter substrate and the capacitance between the antistatic electrode and the common electrode is utilized, so that the liquid crystal display device can be used as a touch panel.
