The invention is directed to systems, methods and computer program products for switching to a machine type communication (MTC) coverage enhancement mode on a network. An exemplary method comprises determining a signal quality for a signal from the network; determining the signal quality is below a threshold quality level for using Long-Term Evolution (LTE) protocol to communicate with the network; in response to determining the signal quality is below the threshold quality level, switching the device to the MTC mode and communicating with the network using MTC specification of the LTE protocol, wherein the device comprises a non-MTC device.

Methods of operating an electronic device are provided. A method of operating a first electronic device includes listening for a wireless transmission by a second electronic device on a wireless communications channel. The method includes determining whether a packet is a particular type of packet. The method includes assigning a randomized time delay value that defines a randomized delay period, in response to determining that the packet is the particular type of packet. The method includes beginning the randomized delay period in response to determining that the wireless communications channel is clear. Moreover, the method includes transmitting the packet via the wireless communications channel based on expiration of the randomized delay period. Embodiments of the invention are directed to systems, methods and computer program products for minimizing data overhead in a cellular network. In some embodiments a method includes receiving, by a base station of the cellular network, location information associated with a mobile device. The method may include determining, by the base station, a location of the mobile device based on the location information; and determining, by the base station, an offload alternative connection point based on the determined location of the mobile device. In some cases, the method includes disconnecting the mobile device from a current connection point; and connecting the mobile device to the offload alternative connection point.
