    Abstract: A tube joint including a male end which has a rounded inner edge having its original surface finish and a female end which is expanded to receive the male end. The male end is formed by chamfering the end outer diameter and flaring the end inner diameter until the end inner diameter is substantially rounded. The female end is expanded so its inner diameter is only slightly greater than the outer diameter of the male end.

    Abstract: Metal cans are welded by frictional treatment of the materials joined. The treatment is provided by a rapidly rotating smooth hard friction tool e.g. wheel contacting a surface of the metal above the join while the parts joined are held in pressure contact by independent pressure exerting means and/or by the wheel itself. In the formation of can side-seams the wheel and the can are relatively traversed and a longitudinal continuous side-seam is formed which in the case of the metal to metal joints is metallurgically homogeneous and may be characterized in that no signs of melting of the base metal are visible at the welded interfaces.

    Abstract: A method of controlling the quality of a product having a weld seam extending longitudinally thereof, the seam being progressively produced by a welding arc generated across adjacent edges of product stock as the stock travels past a welding station, and as the edges are forced together at a location downstream from the welding station. The method includes the steps of continuously measuring a plurality of critical welding parameters as the seam is being formed, and identifying for rejection the lengths of the product welded when any one or group of the welding parameters deviate from limits predetermined for the parameters. By this method confidence levels of 99.95 percent, soundly welded product are obtained.
