摘要: The present invention relates to an electromagnetic system for applying a coating to a metal or metal alloy substrate. The system utilizes a high frequency electromagnetic field to maintain a supply of coating material in a molten condition, to restrict the flow of the molten coating material, and to control the thickness of the applied coating layer. Downstream cooling solidifies the coating layer. The system has particular utility in forming tin coated copper or copper base alloy products.

摘要: The present invention relates to a process and apparatus for controlling an electromagnetic casting system. The process and apparatus utilize at least one sense loop and an electrical parameter relating to the sense loop, e.g. the mutual inductance between the sense loop and a containment inductor, to control during casting the height of the contained head of molten material and/or the ingot size. In a first embodiment, a sense loop is positioned in the air gap between the containment inductor and the outer surface of the forming ingot or the molten metal head, preferably in a location in the vicinity of the liquid-solid interface. In a second embodiment, a plurality of sense loops are used to control the casting system.

摘要: A molten metal spray-depositing apparatus employs a magnetic field-generating nozzle for atomizing a molten metal stream into a spray of metal particles. The magnetic driving field generated by the magnetic atomizing nozzle generates eddy currents which produce an induced field in the metal stream opposing the driving field and creating a torque which causes the stream to break up upon exiting the driving field. The nozzle has one of two configurations for generating one of two generic magnetic field geometries. In one configuration the nozzle utilizes a pair of spaced magnetic poles, such as provided by Helmholtz coils, for generating a transverse magnetic field geometry across the stream. In the other configuration the nozzle employs a solenoid coil for generating a solenoidal magnetic field geometry parallel to the stream. Preferably, the magnetic field of each geometry is a high frequency AC field since better coupling between the field and stream occurs and more eddy currents are induced at higher frequency.

摘要: An apparatus and method for monitoring the liquid/solid interface position of an alloy ingot being formed by either direct chill or electromagnetically enhanced direct chill casting systems comprising an inductive sensor wire disposed about the mold wall of the casting system, driving the sensor wire to cause a magnetic flux to penetrate into the ingot, and sensing the change in the impedance or components of the impedance of the system. Monitoring the liquid/solid interface position allows ready adjustment to operating controls, such as, containment/stirring inductors, cooling systems and casting parameters, thereby producing a desirable ingot.
