The zirconia particles are substantially non-associated and have an average size no greater than 50 nanometers and may contain yttrium. The zirconia particles are prepared by a method that includes two separate hydrothermal treatments.

The article is non-self-supporting and has an initial thickness of less than about three inches when in a first application condition, and an expanded thickness when in a second heated condition. The expanded thickness is greater than the initial thickness. At the expanded thickness, the article meets Section 5.5 of AC101 Acceptance Criteria for Grease Duct Enclosure Assemblies, as specified in April 2001 by the International Council of Building Officials (ICBO-ES).

Heterogeneous catalyst systems, methods of making these systems, and methods of using these systems, wherein catalytically active gold is deposited onto composite support media. The composite support media is formed by providing nanoporous material on at least a portion of the surfaces of carbonaceous host material. In representative embodiments, relatively fine, nanoporous guest particles are coated or otherwise provided on surfaces of relatively coarser activated carbon particles. Catalytically active gold may be deposited onto one or both of the guest or host materials either before or after the guest and host materials are combined to from the composite host material. PVD is the preferred catalyst system of depositing gold.

A cured coating for a siliceous material, preferably an optical fiber, comprises a thermally cured polyorganosilsesquioxane having an oxide powder dispersed therein. The oxide powder has a refractive index from about 1.2 to about 2.7 and includes particles having a particle size less than about 100 nanometers. The cured coating has adhesion to the siliceous material and is transparent to ultraviolet radiation.
