Abstract:
A novel protein food product having a porous expanded structure with the texture and organoleptic properties of meat, is produced by a process which comprises: forming a mixture of a vegetable protein containing material and a meat source in an amount of between about 5 to 80% by weight, said mixture having a protein content on a dry basis of at least about 25% by weight, followed by extrusion of said mixture to form a porous expanded food product. The extrusion of a meat source and vegetable protein material provides a product having the economic and functional advantages of a simulated meat piece derived solely from a vegetable protein containing material, with the palatability of a real piece of meat because of the use of a meat source in the product.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for providing a tunable absorption-emission band in a wavelength selective device are disclosed. A device for selectively absorbing incident electromagnetic radiation includes an electrically conductive surface layer including an arrangement of multiple surface elements. The surface layer is disposed at a nonzero height above a continuous electrically conductive layer. An electrically isolating intermediate layer defines a first surface that is in communication with the electrically conductive surface layer. The continuous electrically conductive backing layer is provided in communication with a second surface of the electrically isolating intermediate layer. When combined with an infrared source, the wavelength selective device emits infrared radiation in at least one narrow band determined by a resonance of the device. In some embodiments, the device includes a control feature that allows the resonance to be selectively modified. The device has broad applications including gas detection devices and infrared imaging.

A blackbody radiation device (110) includes a planar filament emission element (102) and a planar detector (104) for respectively producing and detecting radiation having width dl/1 less than about 0.1 to test a sample gas, where 1 is the wavelength of the radiation; a reflector (108); a window (W); an electrical control (118); and a data output element (116).
Abstract:
A fiber optic reflectometer employs an optical fiber near a target substrate in a deposition chamber. The optical fiber is positioned within the chamber so that deposition of a thin film on the substrate also occurs on a portion of the optical fiber. A combination of monochromatic and broadband white light is transmitted through the optical fiber to the film deposited on it, and light reflectance measurements are made to determine, in situ and substantially in real time, such characteristics of the film as its growth rate, thickness, composition, surface roughness and refractive index. Such measurements can be made without bulk optics and without the precise alignment requirements of ellipsometry techniques and apparatus.
Abstract:
A gage mechanism for a blood pressure measuring device or other similar apparatus includes a supported shaft member having one end in contact with an inflatable bellows. A pointer is attached at an opposite end of the shaft and a helically wound spring is attached to the shaft and a supporting structure. As the bellows inflates, the shaft is axially displaced and causes rotation due to the constraint of the helical ribbon spring, causing a corresponding angular deflection of the attached pointer relative to an indicating scale. The mechanism includes a first adjustment member for allowing the pointer to be preset to a zero or calibrated position, and a second adjustment mechanism that controls the amount of angular rotation of the shaft and pointer for a displacement of the bellows.
Abstract:
An optical mounting system using interconnected annuli that support optical elements is made more accurate by forming raised engagement surfaces around the periphery of the annuli to confront and engage each other in a mounting plane perpendicular to the concentric axis of the annuli. The raised engagement surfaces are preferably formed as concentric ridge rings spaced radially inside and outside a row of screw holes used for interconnecting the annuli. The raised engagement surfaces are also preferably continuous around the peripheries of the annuli so they can be ground accurately flat and provide interannuli mounting surfaces that are resistant to deformation.

Abstract:
An infrared emitter, which utilizes a photonic crystal (PC) structure to produce electromagnetic emissions with a narrow band of wavelengths, includes a semiconductor material layer, a dielectric material layer overlaying the semiconductor material layer, and a metallic material layer having an inner side overlaying the dielectric material layer. The semiconductor material layer is capable of being coupled to an energy source for introducing energy to the semiconductor material layer. An array of surface features are defined in the device in a periodic manner or quasi-periodic. The emitter device is adapted to emit electromagnetic energy having spectral characteristics determined by parameters of the periodically distributed surface features, the parameters including shape, size, depth, distribution geometry, periodicity, material properties and defects.
Abstract:
An absorption spectroscopy apparatus including a sample cell having a central axis, and a side wall coaxially positioned about the axis. The side wall defines a generally circular cross-section of the cell as taken along a plane extending perpendicular to the axis, wherein the generally circular cross-section of the sample cell has an average radius. The side wall includes a plurality of light reflective segments arrayed about the axis, wherein each reflective segment has a cross-section taken along a plane extending perpendicular to the axis of the cell that is concave with respect to the axis. The concave cross-section of each segment has an average radius that is unequal to the average radius of the generally circular cross-section of the sample cell. Among other aspects and advantages, the apparatus of the present disclosure is able to use incoherent, non-collimated light sources while maintaining high optical throughput efficiencies.
