Abstract: A method for operating a vehicle includes drawing operational power from a first set of battery cells and providing heating/cooling to the first set of battery cells and not to a second set of battery cells to maintain the first set of battery cells within an operational temperature window in a first mode of operation. The method switches to a second mode of operation in response to a power assist request, and draws operational power from the first set of battery cells and a second set of battery cells and provides heating/cooling to maintain the first set of battery cells and the second set of battery cells within the operational temperature window during the second mode of operation.

Abstract: A power control system for a battery system of a vehicle includes one or more supplemental protection devices that are connected to at least one of a first contactor, a second contactor, one of N fuses, and one of N vehicle loads. A battery management module is configured to measure and store a plurality of state of health parameters for the battery system and to selectively operate the one or more supplemental protection devices in a coverage gap between first and second coverage areas handled by the first contactor and the second contactor and the N fuses based on a calibration function and/or calibration parameters. A telematics system selectively sends the plurality of state of health parameters for the battery system to a remote server and to receive at least one of a new calibration function and new calibration parameters for the vehicle from the remote server.

Abstract: A battery pack having a plurality of battery modules is provided. Each of the plurality of battery modules includes a thermally conductive frame having a plurality of apertures and a plurality of battery cells, wherein each of the plurality of battery cells is disposed in one of the plurality of apertures. Each of the plurality of battery modules also includes a heating element disposed on a top of the thermally conductive frame and a cooling plate disposed on a bottom of the thermally conductive frame. The thermally conductive frame includes a plurality of cooling ribbons disposed between at least two of the plurality of apertures, wherein each of the plurality of cooling ribbons extend from top of the thermally conductive frame to the bottom of the thermally conductive frame.

Abstract: A system for use with a direct current fast-charging (DCFC) station includes a controller and battery system. The battery system includes first and second battery packs, and first, second, and third switches. The switches have ON/OFF conductive states commanded by the controller to connect the battery packs in a parallel-connected (P-connected) or series-connected (S-connected) configuration. An electric powertrain with one or more electric machines is powered via the battery system. First and second charge ports of the system are connectable to the station via a corresponding charging cable. The first charge port receives a low or high charging voltage from the station. The second charge port receives a low charging voltage. When the station can supply the high charging voltage to the first charge port, the controller establishes the S-connected configuration via the switches, and thereafter charges the battery system solely via the first charge port.

The one or more power sub-packs supply more power than the one or more energy sub-packs and the one or more energy sub-packs supply consistent power for a longer duration than the one or more power sub-packs. The system also includes one or more inter-subsystem switches to electrically isolate or connect adjacent ones of the two or more subsystems.

Abstract: A system to extend a towing range and maneuverability of an automobile vehicle during a towing operation includes a battery-electric-vehicle (BEV) having a vehicle energy pack providing operational energy to the BEV. A powered trailer is releasably connected to the BEV. A trailer module is provided with the powered trailer, the trailer module communicating between the powered trailer and the BEV. A propulsion unit is provided with the powered trailer and is in communication with trailer module and with the BEV using the trailer module. The propulsion unit enhances launch of the BEV and provides an acceleration assist to the BEV.

Abstract: A hybrid transmission for use with a vehicle having an engine has an electric-only mode where the engine is off and a hybrid mode where the engine is on. The hybrid transmission includes an engine connection member configured for connection with the engine, a motor/generator unit configured to selectively operate as a motor, a transmission gearing arrangement, and a transmission input member connected with the transmission gearing arrangement. A torque transfer device is controllable to transfer torque from the motor to the transmission input member upstream in power flow from the transmission gearing arrangement, and a starter gear set includes a planetary gear set positioned in power flow between the engine connection member and the motor. The starter gear set is selectively engageable with the transmission input member and the engine connection member.
