A method of charging fibrous webs with nonaqueous polar liquids. A web 20 that contains nonconductive fibers is wetted with a nonaqueous polar liquid 14. The web 20 is then substantially dried 22 to provide a fibrous electret web. The fibrous electret web can be used as a filter in a filtration face mask 40 that is adapted to cover the nose and mouth of the wearer. The present method has the advantage over known charging methods in that the nonaqueous liquid requires less energy for drying than is required for aqueous liquids. Additionally, many filter webs can be directly wetted with nonaqueous liquids, which cannot be easily wetted with aqueous liquids.

Electret articles such as nonwoven filter webs and respirators exhibit superior oily mist loading performance, low penetration and a small pressure drop.

An oily mist resistant electret filter media is provided. The filter media includes polypropylene electret fibers and a melt processable fluorochemical additive. The additive has a melt temperature of at least 25.degree. C. and a molecular weight of about 500 to 2500. Also provided is a method for filtering particulate material from air containing oily aerosol particles.

The present invention provides technology for controlling, or tuning, the catalytic activity of gold provided upon nanoporous supports such as those derived from nanoparticulate titania. It has been discovered that the nature of the surfaces of the nanoparticles used to support a nano-metal catalyst, such as catalytically active gold, has a profound effect upon the catalytic properties of the supported catalyst. The support surface may be altered as desired to control the activity of the gold. The present invention teaches how thermal treatment of nanoparticulate media incorporated into a nanoporous support prior to deposition of catalytically active gold dramatically suppresses the ability of a resultant catalyst system to oxidize hydrogen. Yet, the system still readily oxidizes CO.

The materials comprise N-substituted amino carbocyclic aromatic compounds of the formula R1R2N—Ar(G)n where Ar is an aryl group, the group R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroalkyl or substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, the group R2 is alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroalkyl or substituted alkyl, and each G is independently hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroalkyl, substituted alkyl, or —NR3R4 where each R3 is independently hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroalkyl or substituted alkyl, and each R4 is independently alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroalkyl or substituted alkyl, and Ar is a phenyl group when n is 5, a naphthalene group when n is 7, and an anthracene group when n is 9.
