Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described for use with a venous system of a subject that includes one or more tributary vessels that flow into a vein at junctions. A blood-pump-catheter (70) includes a material (36) configured to be placed at a downstream location that is downstream of the junctions and to at least partially occlude blood flow through the vein. The material defines a blood-outlet opening (31). A blood pump (24) pumps blood from a region of the vein that is adjacent to the junctions, and through the blood-outlet opening (31). A blood-flow pathway (60) directs upstream venous blood flow from an upstream location that is upstream of the junctions, to downstream of the material (36), without the upstream venous blood flow being pumped by the pump (24). Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including manufacturing an impeller by coupling a material to a helical elongate element, such that the helical elongate element with the material coupled thereto defines a blade of the impeller. A portion of a structure that includes the helical elongate element is dipped into the material while the material is in a liquid state. The material is dried, while the material is being supported by the at least one helical elongate element. During the drying of material, the structure is rotated about its longitudinal axis, such as to facilitate the formation of a film of the material having a substantially uniform thickness within the impeller blade. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including a left-ventricular assist device that includes a tube configured to traverse a subject's aortic valve, with a distal portion of the tube disposed within the subject's left ventricle. A frame is disposed within the distal portion of the tube. A pump disposed within the frame pumps blood through the tube. A distal-tip element defines a straight proximal portion that defines a longitudinal axis, and a curved distal portion that is shaped such as to curve in a first direction with respect to the longitudinal axis before passing through an inflection point and curving in a second direction with respect to the longitudinal axis, such that the curved distal portion defines a bulge on one side of the longitudinal axis. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described, including a left-ventricular assist device that includes an impeller, and a frame disposed around the impeller, the frame having a length of more than 25 mm when disposed in a non-radially constrained configuration. A rigid axial shaft extends from a proximal end of the frame to a distal end of the frame. A motor is disposed outside a body of a subject, and drives the impeller to pump blood within the subject's body, by rotating. A drive cable extends from outside the subject's body to the axial shaft. The drive cable imparts rotational motion from the motor to the impeller by rotating. The drive cable is a flexible cable comprising a plurality of coiled wires. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including a blood pump catheter that includes an axial shaft, and an impeller disposed on the axial shaft. A motor drives the impeller to pump blood, by rotating the impeller. A drive cable extends from the motor to the axial shaft, the drive cable being configured to impart rotational motion from the motor to the impeller by rotating. A distal tip portion is disposed at a distal end of the blood pump catheter. The drive cable, the axial shaft, and the distal tip portion define a continuous lumen therethrough from outside the subject's body to the distal end of the blood pump catheter. The continuous lumen facilitates insertion of the blood pump catheter into the subject's body over a guidewire, and, subsequently, provides a channel through which the purging fluid flows. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including placing a blood pump into a subject's body, the blood pump including an axial shaft, an impeller disposed on the axial shaft, and a drive cable extending from outside the subject's body to the axial shaft. The impeller is driven to pump blood from a distal end of the impeller to a proximal end of the impeller by imparting rotational motion to the impeller via the drive cable, in a given direction of rotation. At least a portion of the drive cable includes a plurality of wires disposed in a coiled configuration that is such that, in response to the drive cable rotating in the given direction of rotation, the plurality of wires disposed in the coiled configuration at least partially unwind, such that the portion of the drive cable shortens axially. Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including deploying a pump head of a left-ventricular assist device in a subject's left ventricle. The pump head includes an axial shaft, and a radially-expandable impeller coupled to the axial shaft. A proximal radial bearing is disposed around the axial shaft proximally to the impeller, and a distal radial bearing is disposed around the axial shaft distally to the impeller. The interface between the axial shaft and the distal radial bearing is purged, by pumping purging fluid into a purging-fluid lumen defined by the left-ventricular assist device. Other applications are also described.
