A system for producing spatially modulated monochrome or color light having gray scale includes an active matrix liquid crystal spatial light modulator having light modulating means including (i) a layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal material which is designed to switch between ON and OFF states and (ii) active matrix means including VLSI circuitry for dividing the layer of liquid crystal material into an array of individual liquid crystal pixels and for causing each of the pixels of liquid crystal material to modulate light individually by switching between the ON and OFF states in a way that depends upon the data which the VLSI circuitry is written. The system also includes illumination means having a light source for directing light from the source into the pixel-divided layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal material in a specific way. And finally, the system includes means for writing the VLSI circuitry with preselected data in accordance with a particular data ordering scheme such that the circuitry, in response to the written data, causes the pixels of liquid crystal material to individually switch between their ON and OFF states and therefore modulate light from the source in a way which, depending upon the data, produces a specific overall pattern of gray scale light.

A display system for acting on light entering the system includes a reflective ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulator and a polarizer arrangement. The polarizer arrangement includes a polarizer for polarizing the light entering the system and directing the polarized light into the spatial light modulator along an optical path having an optical path axis. The reflective spatial light modulator acts on the polarized light to produce an optical output that is directed from the spatial light modulator back into the polarizing arrangement along substantially the same optical path axis that the polarized light is directed into the spatial light modulator. The polarizing arrangement also includes an analyzer configured to receive and analyze the optical output of the spatial light modulator and to direct the analyzed optical output out of the system. A compensator is positioned in the optical path between the polarizer of the polarizing arrangement and the spatial light modulator and in the optical path between the spatial light modulator and the analyzer. The compensator includes a layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal light modulating medium switchable between a first compensator state and a second compensator state. The compensator is configured such that the compensator inverts the optical output of the spatial light modulator when the compensator is switched to the second state. The layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal light modulating medium of the compensator and the spatial light modulator having retardances that are substantially different than one another.

The phase mask can be provided as a multilevel surface of relatively higher index of refraction material on an inner surface of a transmissive cover window or as a separate transmissive window between the cover window and the pixels of the SLM. If the phase mask is to be used with a liquid crystal SLM, then it may be desirable to planarize the surface of the cover window contacting the liquid crystal by providing a layer of relatively lower index of refraction material adjacent the multilevel surface. The phase mask can also be provided on the transmissive cover window by patterned ion deposition, exposing patterned light to a photopolymeric material, or in some other suitable fashion. Arranging for the pixel electrodes to be at one of multiple levels rather than lying in an exactly planar relationship can also effectively create the phase mask.

A method of operating a liquid crystal cell includes DC-balancing by displaying an inverse image with electric fields of increased magnitude relative to the image producing electric fields. While the inverse image is displayed the image is prevented from being visible by either turning off the light source or re-directing or blocking the light from reaching the viewing area. The image producing electric fields and the inverse image producing electric fields are such that the cumulative time integral of the electric fields that are present in one direction across the liquid crystal material is substantially equal to the cumulative time integral of the electric fields that are present in the opposite direction during the given period of time during the operation of liquid crystal cell. The time duration of the inverse image portion is shorter than the time duration of the image portion by an amount proportional to the increased magnitude of the additional electric fields. Because of the shorter time period when no image is visible, the system brightness is increased.

There is disclosed herein a liquid crystal spatial light modulator which includes, among other components, a layer of liquid crystal material which changes the way in which it acts on light in response to predetermined changes in voltage across the layer, whereby to modulate the light so acted upon, and an arrangement for applying a light modulating voltage across the layer of liquid crystal material and for modulating the voltage during a given modulation period. This latter arrangement includes a non-linear capacitor and a voltage coupling scheme for changing the voltage across the capacitor during the modulation period in a way which changes the capacitance of the capacitor and thereby capacitively couples at least a part of the change in voltage across the capacitor to the layer of liquid crystal material.

Disclosed are illumination systems especially suitable for very small data projectors, called pico projectors. The disclosed illumination systems provide high optical efficiency for projectors that need polarized light but utilize unpolarized light sources such as light-emitting diodes. Some of the disclosed illumination systems make use of light sources of different colors, and provide polarization conversion in ways based on color-selective elements of a variety of different types to convert substantially all the light emitted by the light sources to a single polarization, without increasing the effective optical extent of the source. Other disclosed illumination system provide compact ways to combine light from differently colored light sources without the use of bulky x-cube or angled dichroic elements.

A method of fabricating a liquid crystal display device by introducing a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) between two substrates, contacting the FLC to a molecularly smooth edge, and aligning the FLC by introducing a temperature gradient normal to the edge. In one embodiment, the FLC is aligned by cooling it from an isotropic phase to a smectic phase at a rate that is relatively slow. For example, the cooling rate may be less than about 3 degrees Celsius per hour. In one embodiment, smectic layers are formed that are parallel to the edge. In one embodiment, the molecularly smooth edge is an air bubble.
