The patterned layer defines a high nucleation energy barrier surface and a plurality of nucleation surfaces, such that a contact angle of a molten semiconducting material with the nucleation surfaces is less than a contact angle of the molten semiconducting material with the high nucleation energy barrier surface, and the nucleation surfaces are formed from either the mold material or the patterning material.

A process for creating hydrophobic and oleophobic glass surfaces. The process consists of heating a glass article to temperatures near the glass softening point and pressing a textured mold into the glass article to create surface texture. The mold texture is selected to have dimensions that convey hydrophobicity and oleophobicity to the glass article when combined with appropriate surface chemistry. The surface features are controlled through choice of mold texture and through process parameters including applied pressure, temperature, and pressing time. Articles made by this process are also described.

Free-standing ordered mesoporous carbon films and form factors are prepared by depositing an aqueous precursor mixture that includes a water soluble carbon precursor, a non-ionic surfactant, and an oil onto a substrate or scaffold, drying the precursor mixture, and then cross-linking and heat treating (carbonizing) the carbon precursor. After carbonization, the ordered mesoporous carbon films and form factors include discrete domains of ordered, mesoscale pores.

A method for preparing ordered mesoporous silicon carbide (OMSiC) nanocomposites uses an evaporation-induced self-assembly of a precursor composition that preferably includes a phenolic resin, pre-hydrolyzed tetraethyl orthosilicate, a surfactant, and butanol. The precursor mixture is dried, cross-linked and heated to form ordered mesoporous silicon carbide material having discrete domains of ordered, mesoscale pores.
