This invention relates to a method for maximizing the stone chipping resistance and scratch resistance of a multi-layer finish on an automotive substrate. A colored basecoat is applied to the substrate and directly on top of the basecoat is applied a protective clearcoat having a fracture resistance about equal to or above 26 mN and a plastic deformation resistance about equal to or above 30 mN/μm. The resultant coating in addition to being durable to the elements and having excellent appearance produces a finish with an outstanding balance of scratch and stone chip resistance after application.

The present invention provides an improved multi-layer composite of two or more polymeric layers at least one of which is formed from a thermosetting composition. The composite includes at least a first polymeric layer formed on a substrate and a second polymeric layer over the first polymeric layer, wherein in the absence of a boron-containing compound, the first and second polymeric layers have poor interlayer adhesion. The improvement resides in the inclusion of at least one boron-containing compound in one or both of the first and second polymeric layers in an amount sufficient to improve the interlayer adhesion between the first and second polymeric layers. Also provided is an improved curable coating composition used to form a multi-layer composite coating of two or more cured coating layers, at least one of which is formed from the thermosetting composition. The present invention relates to fire retardant wooden components and a method of manufacturing a fire retardant-treated wooden component, such as a slat. The method includes the step of pressure treating a piece of lumber with a fire retardant solution; drying the pressure treated piece of lumber to a moisture content of 15-23%; cutting the piece of lumber into wooden components of the desired dimensions; applying a coat of lacquer thinner base to the wooden components; drying the base thinner coat; applying a UV cured sealant coating on the dried base coat; drying the sealant coat; applying a UV cured polyurethane top coat on the sealant coated wooden components; and curing the polymer coating.

When coating workpieces, in particular vehicle bodies, the following coating layers are applied in succession and in a manner known per se: a primer layer in an electrophoretic dip coating process, a functional layer, an aqueous base coating layer and a clear coating layer. In order to configure this process in an environmentally compatible manner, in particular in order to avoid solvent emissions and coating sludge, the functional coating layer is also applied by an electrophoretic dip coating process and the clear coating layer is applied as a powder coating by electrostatic spraying, which coating is subsequently stoved. In this manner, it is possible to bring about an overall reduction in solvent emissions to approximately one sixth of the previous value of known processes and in coating sludge formation to approximately one third of the previous value.
