Extending round the can body transversely to the longitudinal edges (12, 14) are two circumferential scorings (16) which define a tearing strip (18) laterally. The tearing strip (18) is extended by a tongue (20) which is welded onto the outer longitudinal edge (12) and which can be gripped by a key and rolled up. In a welding zone (42) which is adjacent to a starting scoring (30), the tearing strip (18) is stiffened by the welded-on tongue (20) in such a manner that it tears away from the can body reliably along the circumferential scorings (16) during the rolling up of the tongue (20).

A method of transporting can bodies for a fully automated resistance welding machine comprising a roll former station for rolling the bodies, two successively arranged driven transport systems, and a pair of welding electrodes. The transport systems comprise endless, revolving chains equipped with fixed catches or cams and defining first and second chains. The first chain passes through the roll former station where, during rolling of the blanks into the can bodies, it cyclically and periodically remains at least approximately stationary, whereas the second chain has a sinusoidal velocity course. The can bodies exposed to the intermittent non-continuous mode of operation of the first chain, necessitated by the roll forming operation, are transferred to the second chain and experience a movement which is stabilizing for the can bodies.

A method of manufacturing a metallic can formed like a case container, comprising forming a four-fold seamed edge portion by folding and seaming by adhesive means edges of a sheet for building a can body. The four-fold seamed edge portion is included in a curled and seamed portion which is formed by curling and pressing the flanged edge portion of an end plate together with the marginal portion of the can body. All layers of the seamed sheet are tightly joined opposite each other in the curled and seamed portion, thus hermetically sealing a finished can.

The treatment is provided by a rapidly rotating smooth hard friction tool e.g. wheel contacting a surface of the metal above the join while the parts joined are held in pressure contact by independent pressure exerting means and/or by the wheel itself. In the formation of can side-seams the wheel and the can are relatively traversed and a longitudinal continuous side-seam is formed which in the case of the metal to metal joints is metallurgically homogeneous and may be characterized in that no signs of melting of the base metal are visible at the welded interfaces.

The roller pair includes an inner roller having an outer transverse contour corresponding to the inner can diameter, and the outer roller has two diameters separated by a step portion, preferably a bevel surface. The seam is passed through the rollers so that the step portion deforms the can body in the area of the inner free edge of the welded seam to reduce to a minimum the internal offset area along opposite sides of the seam in the vicinity of the inner free edge.

A stream of fluidized powder is shaped and is jetted toward the side seam of the can at an angle less than 30 degrees. The side seam of the can is moving at a uniform speed and in this way the powdered material settles onto the can side seam with an even distribution of powdered material across each lateral unit of the side seam. The edges of the stripe are sharp because the side seam lies in the segmented belt.
