For the manufacture of a polyethylene terephalate (P.E.T.) bottle with an off-centre neck, a preform is heated and its body is slightly angled with respect to its neck by sideways displacement. The preform is inserted in a blowing mould. A tilted stretching rod is advanced into the preform at the same time as it is blown to shape in the mould. The finished bottle has its neck off-centre with respect to the rest of the bottle.

The present invention provides compositions useful as a barrier layer in, for example, packaging products. The compositions generally comprise a blend of (i) a polyester resin, preferably an aromatic polyester resin such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and (ii) a polyamide material (e.g., MXD6). The blend optionally may further comprise (iii) an oxygen scavenging material. The present invention also provides containers (e.g., containers formed by expansion of preforms) having a multilayered body-forming portion including: a layer comprising the aforementioned blend; and one or more layers of a formable polymer composition. The present invention also provides methods of making such containers.

Method and apparatus for making multilayer injection molded plastic articles. In one embodiment, a relatively thin inner sleeve layer is molded in a first mold cavity on a core, the first mold cavity being heated to maintain an outer surface of the inner sleeve layer at an elevated temperature, and the core and sleeve layer are transferred to a second mold cavity to mold a relatively thick outer layer over the sleeve layer while the outer surface is at the elevated temperature, where the elevated temperature is selected to provide melt adhesion between the inner sleeve and the outer layer during the second molding step. In another embodiment, a method of injection molding is provided in which a first thermoplastic material is used to form a first preform portion having an average percent crystallinity of at least about 30%, and a second thermoplastic material is injection molded to form a second preform portion which remains substantially amorphous.

The invention provides a light weight self-standing blow molded two liter carbonated beverage bottle having a unique petaloid base made from a monobase preform. The base comprises a petaloid design which has a plurality of at least three (preferably five) feet. The monobase preform has a thick reinforcing ring forming portion which remains unstretched during blowing. The reinforcing ring forming portion is thicker than both the sidewall forming portion and the gate area forming portion of the preform thereby resulting in increased stretching in both those areas. The reinforcing ring extends circumferentially around the base. By providing such a reinforcing ring, a bottle having a bigger foot radius and/or containing less material use can be realized. The resulting bottle has less stress whitening and greater stress crack resistance while at the same time using less material and/or having a larger radius than prior bottles.

The reinforcement of a blow molded base of the type including a generally hemispherical configuration interrupted at circumferentially spaced intervals by protruding legs. Prior cracking problems at the intersection of the foot-radii of such legs with the generally hemispherical portion are solved by an internal reinforcement of the base in that area. The reinforcement may be either localized with the points of reinforcement being circumferentially spaced and in alignment with the legs, or may be in the form of a continuous band. The reinforcement is effected by providing a preform from which a container employing such base is blow molded and wherein the preform is provided either with internal ribs or an internal band of reinforcement and the resultant containers are blow molded in the same mold as previously utilized.
