Abstract: A wheel assembly has a rim with an outer radial surface. A tire coupled to the rim defines a first interior region between the outer radial surface and the tire. A bladder coupled to the rim defines a second interior region between the outer radial surface and the bladder. A third interior region is defined between the bladder and the tire. The wheel assembly includes a valve fluidly coupled to the second interior region and the third interior region. The valve is movable between a first position and a second position. The second interior region and the third interior region are fluidly isolated from one another when the valve is in the first position. The second interior region and the third interior region may be fluidly coupled to one another when the valve is in the second position.

Abstract: A pneumatic tire assembly includes a tire having a pneumatic cavity and a filter disposed between the pneumatic cavity and atmosphere. The filter is constructed of a hydrophobic material for avoiding all liquid adhesion. First and second sidewalls extend respectively from first and second tire bead regions to a tire tread region. The first sidewall has at least one bending region operatively bending when radially within a rolling tire footprint. A sidewall groove is defined by groove walls positioned within the bending region of the first tire sidewall. Abstract: A tyre apparatus is provided, the apparatus including a tyre body for attachment to a wheel rim to define a first inflatable volume. An inner chamber defines a second inflatable volume which is located within the first inflatable volume of the tyre body. A first fluid communication path is provided between the first and second inflatable volumes and a second fluid communication path is provided between the first inflatable volume and the atmosphere. A first valve opens and closes the first fluid communication path, and a second valve opens and closes the second fluid communication path. The tensile strength and pressure-containing capacity of the material structure of the second inflatable volume is greater than that of the tyre first inflatable volume. A first fluid pressure within the first inflatable volume of the tyre body is optimisable by opening the first valve to allow pressure transfer from the second inflatable volume into the tyre body, and/or opening the second valve to allow pressure to vent from the tyre body to atmosphere. A vehicle wheel and active tyre pressure control system incorporating the tyre apparatus are also provided.

Abstract: A device 10 for providing air to a tyre which is mounted on a rim (16) which itself is free to rotate about a fixed, that is, non-rotatable axle (22). A pump is provided which in use rotates with the tyre and which is configured to provide, when activated, air under pressure to the tyre. The pump drive system for activating the pump upon a loss of air pressure in the tyre consists of a first part that is rotationally connected to the tyre and a second part which includes a first clutch plate (42) which rotates with the first part whilst the pump is not activated. The pump is activated by inhibiting the second part of the drive system from rotating with the first part. Relative rotation between the first and second parts drives the pump to provide air under pressure to the tyre. There is a second clutch plate (26) which is configured so that it can be attached to the fixed axle (22) so that it itself is fixed, that is, non-rotatable. The first and second clutch plates (26, 42) are normally spaced apart. A clutch piston, moved by pressure in the tyre, engages the clutch by urging the first clutch plate (42) against the second clutch plate (26) upon the pressure in the tyre dropping below a predetermined value.

Abstract: A tire pressure control system includes a tire mounted on a wheel that is connected to an axle, with pneumatic fittings communicating with an interior of this tire. A digital pressure switch has a pair of pneumatic lines that extend from it. These pneumatic lines connect to the pneumatic fittings so that the digital pressure switch communicates with the tire. An electronic solenoid valve communicates with the digital pressure switch by electrical connection to communicate with the interior of the tire.
