A pin on the first portion extending into an annular groove around a circumference of the first portion may allow this rotation and limited translation. The second portion has a threaded end adapted to screw into the chromatography equipment with the first portion remaining relatively rotation free as the second portion is screwed into place.

Monolithic cartridges including a plurality of nominally aligned polymer fibers can be used as stationary phase materials for liquid chromatography separations. Bundles of fibers are packed together so as to form capillary channels between the fibers. Different polymer compositions permit the “chemical tuning” of the separation process. The fibers can be physically or chemically bonded at spaced locations throughout the cartridge or can be packed together under pressure by use of an encasing wrap to form the capillary channels. Use of fibers allows a wide range of liquid flow rates with very low backpressures. Applications in HPLC, cap-LC, prep-scale separations, analytical separations, waste remediation/immobilization, extraction of selected organic molecules/ions from solution, purification of liquid streams (process waste, drinking water, pure solvents), selective extraction of cell matter and bacteria from growth media, and immobilization of cell matter and bacteria are envisioned.

A manufacturing method of an open capillary column comprises the steps of giving alkaline treatment to an inner wall of an open capillary tube, applying one of oligo silica, oligo zirconia and oligo titania on the inner wall, filling the open capillary tube with alkaline solution to form one of a silica layer, a zirconia layer and titania layer, discharging the alkaline solution and heat-treating the capillary tube to form a base of a stationary phase. The open capillary column of the present invention comprises a stationary phase having a very large surface area. It is useful for a separation analysis field such as liquid chromatography and electrochromatography.

A capillary valve, connector and router where one or more cylindrical fibers, which may be capillaries, plugged capillaries, optical fibers, or the like, including at least one capillary tube are contained in a first cylindrical bundle of fibers that terminates at a first face. A second cylindrical bundle of fibers also containing one or more fibers including at least one capillary tube terminates in a second face abutting the first face. A fastener or adapter holds the members together with faces in mutually biased alignment, allowing relative rotation of the two cylindrical bundles which terminate in rotatable ferrules. Various functions achieved by rotation include a zero dead volume slide valve, a fluid router and a manifold. The fibers in each sleeve are preferably of uniform size for close symmetrical packing, but could be of disparate sizes, allowing connection of macroscale tubes to capillary tubes. A single connector member may be attached by a fastener to a reservoir or other macroscale device to bring one or more capillary tubes into fluid communication with a macroscale device. A plurality of fibers in one ferrule could allow dispensing of fluid from a single fiber in the other ferrule so that a single fiber could feed a plurality of wells through the plurality of fibers. Connection of a plurality of macroscale pumps enables push-pull fluid motion, with routing, in a capillary system formed by a plurality of fibers coupled by switches, connectors and routers. Chemical reactions, separations and analysis may be carried out with microliter volumes and smaller.

A connectorized capillary and in-line flow cell system which greatly expedites the construction of capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and other separation instrumentation. A capillary is mounted within a cavity formed in a body, and a mechanical fastener is positioned about the body. The inner diameter of the fastener is less than the outer diameter of the body, so that the connector may be firmly coupled to any system component having a corresponding portion adapted to accept the fastener. The connectorized capillaries thus permit permanent or semi-permanent attachment to various in-line flow cell devices such as detectors, valves, buffer reservoirs and the like. For example, an in-line conductivity detector is assembled by connecting a conductivity meter to the opposing ends of the flow cell body. Annular sensing surfaces can also be provided within the cell. The same basic flow cell structure can also be used as a discrete separation valve by forming two transverse openings in the flow cell body and by using a ferrule having a slotted or castleated end. The valve can be electrically operated by switching a ground reference electrode between two or more buffer reservoirs. The same connectorized capillaries may also be used with fused plate-type systems containing etched channels.
