Abstract: A fluidic bridge device for transport of a fluid sample between a first sample processing device and a second sample processing device. The fluidic bridge may include one or more fluid channels extending between fluid-tight couplings attachable to transfer ports of the first and second sample processing device. In one aspect, the first device is a sample preparation device and the second device is an assay device. The fluidic bridge can include at least two fluid conduits, at least one for transport of the prepared sample, and at least one other to facilitate displacement of air to allow flow of the prepared sample through the other fluid conduit. The fluid channels can include one or more of an amplification chamber, a processing chamber, a gas-permeable vent, a bubble trap, a filter, and an external port. Methods of preparing and transporting a fluid sample between devices are provided herein.

Abstract: A dual balance electrode trap having an outer chamber, a droplet dispenser holder removably coupled to the top surface of the outer chamber, and a rod holder having a central opening and four peripheral openings that are sized and shaped to allow four respective quadrupole metal rods to pass therethrough. The droplet dispenser holder has a top surface, a bottom surface, and a through hole that extends from the dispenser holder top surface to the droplet dispenser bottom surface. The through hole has a larger diameter portion adjacent to the top surface and a smaller diameter portion adjacent to the bottom surface, thereby preventing a droplet dispenser distal tip from extending entirely through the hole and contacting electrodes in the DBET. The rod holder is configured to be removably coupled to the quadrupole metal rods so that a location of the rod holder relative to the metal rods is adjustable.

Abstract: A method for ensuring a microbiological purity of a single-use device for carrying out a biotechnological process, the single-use device including at least one gamma-sterilizable component which is formed from materials suitable for a sterilization by gamma radiation, and at least one non-gamma-sterilizable subunit which contains a material unsuitable for a sterilization by gamma radiation. Both the component and the subunit each have an area that comes into contact with a process medium when the biotechnological process is carried out. The method includes the steps of sterilizing the gamma-sterilizable component by gamma radiation; protecting the medium-contacting area of the gamma-sterilizable component by a sterile barrier; sterilizing the non-gamma-sterilizable subunit with superheated steam; protecting the medium-contacting area of the non-gamma-sterilizable subunit by a sterile barrier; removing the sterile barriers; and mounting the gamma-sterilized component and the superheated steam-sterilized subunit in the single-use device immediately after removing the sterile barriers.

Abstract: A device and method are provided to facilitate the handling of a volume of fluid. The device includes an elongated tube having an open first end and a second end. The tube defines a reservoir for receiving the volume of fluid. A stanchion has a first end received within the reservoir of the tube and a second end projecting from the open end of the elongated tube. In operation, the elongated tube is deposited in a first capsule having fluid therein. The first capsule is centrifuged such that the volume of fluid is received in a reservoir in the tube through the open end. The tube is removed from the first capsule and positioned in a second capsule such that the open end of the tube is spaced from a closed end of the second capsule. The second capsule is centrifuged such that the volume of fluid is expelled from the reservoir of the tube.

Abstract: A composite structure with high pressure resistance that is suitable for a flow channel is produced by reducing the number of components while maintaining the excellent chemical resistance and high stress tolerance inherent to a glass substrate and a resin substrate. A glass substrate surface is modified with a hydrolyzable silicon compound, and the glass substrate is brought into contact with the resin substrate. Subsequently, the contact surface between the glass substrate and the resin substrate is heated to a temperature from the glass transition temperature to the pyrolysis temperature of the resin substrate, eliminating gaps between the glass substrate and the resin substrate to bring them into close contact with each other, and causing chemical binding or anchor effects between the glass substrate and the resin substrate via the hydrolyzable silicon compound. Thus, the glass substrate and the resin substrate are firmly fixed to each other.

Abstract: An apparatus for collecting, storing and transferring a liquid specimen includes a first cup for collecting a liquid specimen and a lid attachable to the first cup for closing an opening in the first cup. The lid defines a protruding collar, the lid and the collar define an aperture extending through the lid and a length of the collar. The apparatus further includes a transfer assembly including a tube having first and second ends, the first end defining a point, the second end configured for insertion through the aperture in the collar for transferring a liquid specimen from the first cup through the tube. The first end of the tube extends through a bottom of a second cup and into the second cup. The first end of the tube configured for insertion into an evacuated vial for transferring a liquid specimen from the first cup to the vial.
