The present invention relates to the enrichment and detection of microorganisms which contaminate food products, especially beverages and soft-drinks. It is particularly suitable for the detection of beer-spoiling bacteria. The present invention provides a novel system which a) improves the recovery of spoilage microbes b) provides faster detection and earlier emergence of colonies on plates, and c) provides larger colony sizes which makes detection easier.

The invention consists of a method for determining Total Dietary Fiber (TDF) and its sub-fractions, Insoluble Dietary Fiber (IDF) and Soluble Dietary Fiber (SDF) in food and feed samples which utilizes flexible reaction/filtration containers that can be divided into one or more sections for capturing the IDF and SDF fractions separately or for capturing TDF in its entirety. Each container is fashioned as a bag that can be temporarily sealed in multiple locations to create multiple sections and is made of non-porous and porous material. Use of these containers eliminates the need for problematic transfers of mixtures from beaker to filter, and vastly improves the filtration process.

In addition, alcohol δ13C and δ18O isotopic values, along with δ18O isotopic value of the product water are used for the analysis. Products containing sugar are also subjected to tightly controlled fermentation.

The present invention relates to a drug detection device for detecting the presence of a date rape drug in a beverage comprising: a straw; and a chemical reagent, where said chemical reagent coats the surface of the straw and changes color upon contact with a date rape drug. In one exemplary embodiment, the drug detection device may be used to test for Gamma Hydoxybutyrate (GHB) or ROHYPNOL® (Flunitrazepam). A stirring straw may be used as a component of the drug detection device as opposing to a conventional straw. The present invention also includes a method of date rape drug detection comprising the steps of: coating a stirring device with a chemical reagent; inserting the stirring device in a beverage; and observing the stirring device to determine an indication of the presence of a date rape drug.

A pressure sensor such as a strain gauge senses the pressure exerted by the hydrogel within the sensor body. The sensed pressure is stored or displayed. The hydrogel is reactive to the one or more chemical substances so that contact causes the hydrogel to either increase the pressure above the base pressure under which the hydrogel is held or to decrease the pressure relative to the base pressure of the hydrogel.
