摘要: A method and system for improving performance in a disc drive using a genetic algorithm. Chromosomes of parameter settings are loaded into disc drive components and one or more metrics are monitored that respond to variations in the parameter settings. A fitness for each chromosome is obtained as a function of the one or more metrics. The chromosomes of settings are mated and adapted over time based on the fitness of each chromosome. Parameters within each chromosome vary by random selection based on the fitness of the chromosome.

摘要: A cassette auto changer system includes a cassette console mounting a rack for holding a plurality of tape cassettes, a drive console for mounting a tape playing or playing and recording device or a plurality of such devices. A base console mounts the cassette and drive consoles and the entire cassette auto changer system is housed in a housing console. According to a compact design a cassette shuttle portion of the transport mechanism is rotatable both vertically and horizontally and includes means, such as a cassette hand portion, for effecting insertion and extraction of a cassette from one of a plurality of cassette compartments provided in the cassette rack. The cassette hand may also include a release lever engaging a lock lever at each cassette compartment. Further, grasping members include a centering device for achieving a predetermined support position for a cassette. In addition, paired positional detection portions and a corresponding sensors are provided. For compactness, driven components receive driving power from a power source via other, intervening driven components. The cassette transport is also operable to and from a cassette port whereby cassettes may be inserted into and removed from the housing console. Control means is provided to allow the a single cassette port to function as both an IN or an OUT port. Thus a compact, full featured cassette auto changer may be provided which is robust, reliable and compact.

摘要: Provided are a method, system, and program for estimating coil resistance of a voice coil motor for an actuator assembly in a disk drive system. An estimation is made of a calibration coil resistance during a calibration operation. A determination is made of a distance moved during a seek operation. The determined distance and the calibration coil resistance are used to estimate a current coil resistance following the seek operation.

摘要: A method and apparatus are provided for implementing intelligent spin-up for a disk drive. When a command is received, checking for a disk drive start command is performed. Responsive to identifying the disk drive start command, a no-start flag is checked. Responsive to identifying the no-start flag being set, an error code is returned without starting the disk drive. The disk drive is started only when the no-start flag is not set. During operation of the disk drive, the disk drive is monitored to identify a drive fault condition. Responsive to identifying a disk drive fault, the identified disk drive fault is checked to identify a predefined inoperative drive or dead device fault. When a predefined dead device fault is identified, the no-start flag is set and an error code for the predefined dead device fault is stored. Also a no-load flag is set that is used when the disk drive is running to stop the disk drive and return an error code before the transducer heads are loaded.

摘要: Management of digital storage space during the playback of moving images in a broadcasted program or any other coherent moving image presentation involves marking already-viewed frames for deletion. The marking occurs before completion of the playback of the presentation so that memory space is made immediately available for additional recording of other broadcasted presentations or for other purposes before completion of the playback of the video. A latency time period between playback and authorization for deletion gives the viewer flexibility to replay parts of the presentation before deletion. The latency time period is optionally adaptable, and may be adjusted in accordance with automatic monitoring of whether the viewer is viewing the playback and in accordance with predefined parameters derived from the stored presentation. A count may be maintained of the number of times a frame is played back to refrain from marking until a particular count is reached.

摘要: A disk drive having an optical signal connector and a magnetic power coupling is placed in a drive carrier. The bottom of the carrier has a recess with a transverse pin mounted in the recess. A pair of small magnets are mounted near the rear of the carrier. The carrier slidably mounts in the drawer of a disk drive library. The drawer has an optical signal connector and a magnetic power coupling that mate with those of the disk drive. The drawer also has a sensor for detecting the magnets on the carrier, and an eject button for manually ejecting the carrier. In addition, a drive mechanism is mounted in the bottom of the drawer for engaging the pin on the bottom of the carrier. Although the carrier may be manually inserted or removed from the drawer, the disk drive library can also perform these functions automatically. The automated sequence is accomplished by inserting the carrier into the drawer until the pin engages the drive mechanism. When the sensor senses the first magnet, the system actuates the drive mechanism to pull the carrier completely into the drawer such that the connectors and couplings interconnect. Proper registration of the carrier in the drawer is verified when the sensor senses the second magnet.

摘要: According to a recording/playback apparatus of the present invention, as in FIG. 1, an upper control unit (9) transmits a composite command comprising a real processing command and a real command to a disk device (13), and the disk device (13) performs a process until a point of time when an operation cannot be continued unless the virtual command is changed to the real processing command to be operated beforehand, in response to the virtual command, after the real processing command is completed, while selecting an optimum seek speed or disk rotation speed. The recording/playback apparatus so constructed can maintain the continuity of continuous data as well as perform an optimum operation in accordance with an expected performance while switching speeds of seek and disk rotation in detail.
