The design and construction of past oxygen injection systems having an oxygen mixer to inject oxygen into an air intake pipe required the use of oxygen in a highly pressurized state. The use of high pressure oxygen required precise pressure control in order to maintain safety. Additionally, the high pressure tank used for storing the oxygen was not space efficient due to the large volume occupied by the oxygen in the gaseous state. The present invention overcomes these problems by utilizing oxygen in the liquid state. Liquid oxygen is stored within a more space efficient storage tank. A solenoid is signaled through an electronic control unit to open under specific operating conditions allowing liquid oxygen to flow from the storage tank. Upon leaving the storage tank, the liquid oxygen is converted to a gaseous state where it flows through an oxygen supply pipe so that the oxygen can be injected by an oxygen mixer into an air intake pipe for mixing with ambient air. The ability to increase the oxygen level during specific operating conditions produces more efficient combustion and reduction in black smoke.

A diesel engine intake system including a timing valve which is positioned in the intake system in engine starting and warming-up periods under a cold engine condition. The timing valve is opened in the final period of the intake stroke so that a strong suction pressure is produced in the combustion chamber before the timing valve is opened. When the timing valve is opened, the intake air as rushes into the combustion chamber at a high speed, whereby the intake air is compressed under the inertia of the high speed flow to thereby increase the temperature of the intake air. The engine is also provided with a blow-by passage and an exhaust gas recirculation passage, both opening to the intake passage upstream of the timing valve, so that it is possible to prevent the blow-by gas and the recirculated exhaust gas from being drawn under the suction pressure when the timing valve is closed.

When it is predicted that temporary reduction occurs to the charging efficiency of the fresh air, the control device calculates the target throttle opening degree by a second arithmetic operation by which an increase speed of a throttle opening degree is restrained more than by the first arithmetic operation, instead of calculating the target throttle opening degree by the first arithmetic operation.

The emission of atmospheric pollutants in the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine having a carburettor is reduced by regulating the composition of the inlet gases, and hence the exhaust gases, of the engine by means of a control device comprising an extra air duct, which has a control valve and bypasses the carburetor, for supplying extra air to the engine inlet, a recirculating duct for recirculating exhaust gases to the engine inlet, a controller which is responsive to signals from an exhaust gas composition sensor installed in the exhaust outlet of the engine and which controls an electrically operated valve in the recirculating duct, and a pressure-sensitive device which communicates with the recirculating duct upstream of the electrically operated valve and which actuates the extra air control valve to regulate the supply of extra air to the engine through the extra air duct.
