Abstract:
The invention relates to a dendritic macromolecule comprising a core and branches emanating from the core wherein the branches are based on vinyl cyanide and/or fumaryl dinatrile units. The invention also relates to processes for preparing these dendritic macromolecules. The dendritic macromolecules according to the invention are not sensitive to degradation through hydrolysis reactions and are also very stable at a high temperature. The processes are very suitable for large scale production of the dendritic macromolecules without requiring purification of reaction intermediates.
Abstract:
A process is provided for fabricating composite membranes by coating a porous substrate with a solution of selective polymer. A reserve of non-solvent medium is incorporated in the substrate pore network which allows the substrate to be successfully coated with a polymer solution formulated in a solvent medium which is also a solvent for the substrate material.
Abstract:
The invention provides novel hydroxyl functional polyurethanes which can be used in magnetic media binders applications. The polyurethanes comprise strong carboxylic acid groups pendant from the polymer backbone, which groups can be produced by esterification of backbone hydroxyl moieties with cyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydrides. Examples of anhydrides useful in preparation of the polyurethanes include anhydrides of tetrachlorophthalic acid, tetrafluorophthalic acid, and dichloromaleic acid, etc. The polyurethanes, which are optionally radiation curable, show high affinity for magnetic pigments, and blends of the polyurethanes with vinyl and non-vinyl resins afford excellent binders for magnetic recording media.
Abstract:
A glass flake comprising a flake of glass having formed on its surface a metal covering layer on which is formed a dense protective covering layer of a metal oxide. The glass flake is produced by maintaining a flake of glass in an alkaline solution containing metal alkoxide, water and an alcohol, followed by the separation and firing thereof.
Abstract:
A polymeric monomer (A) having as a main component thereof a (meth)acryl type monomer which is subjected to aqueous suspension polymerization in the presence of a compound (B) which is substantially insoluble in water and sparingly soluble in the polymeric monomer (A). The compound (B) has at least one, preferably two or more, structural units, selected from the group consisting of --SH, --S--S--, --COOH, --NO.sub.2, and --OH. The use of compound (B), in the suspension polymerization of the (meth)acryl type monomer, represses of the production of by-produced minute particles due to sympathetic emulsion polymerization. The suspension polymerization permits production of meth)acryl type polymer particles having high heat stability and a small range of particle diameters.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to methods for spraying water-borne coating compositions having at least about thirty five percent by weight of the solvent fraction by using compressed fluids such as carbon dioxide and ethane, so as to decrease runs, sags and drying time in the application of coatings.
Abstract:
Arc-quenching coating compositions are provided with effective arc-extinguishing properties and improved track resistance properties, and are relatively easy to apply in liquid form. The coating compositions are used, for example, in high voltage current limiting fuses, expulsion fuses, circuit breakers, circuit interrupters, separable cable connectors, or the like for interrupting circuits. The arc-quenching coating compositions include an arc-quenching gas-evolving material (A) and a film-forming polymer (B) having minimal tracking properties, in which the film-forming polymer (B) acts as a liquid vehicle for the coating composition. The arc-quenching material (A) is preferably selected from the group of guanidine, guanidine carbonate, guanidine acetate, 1,3-diphenylguanidine, guanine, melamine, melamine cyanurate, urea, hydantoin, allantoin and derivatives and mixtures thereof. The film-forming polymer (B) is preferably selected from the group of urethane, acrylic, melamine-formaldehyde polymers and derivatives and mixtures thereof. Arc-quenching compositions are also provided with effective arc-extinguishing properties, improved non-tracking properties, and thermal stability, and the compositions are selected from the group of gas-evolving materials (A) of guanidine carbonate, guanidine acetate, 1,3-diphenylguanidine, guanine, melamine cyanurate, urea, hydantoin and allantoin.
Abstract:
This invention relates to elastomeric flexible articles (e.g., film articles) that exhibit enhanced lubricity ("slip") with respect to both dry and damp surfaces, particularly skin or other tissue of the wearer, as compared to similar articles or films that are not treated as described herein. This invention also relates to processes for making such articles or films.
Abstract:
Telomers of the structure ##STR1## are disclosed, where R is --CH.sub.3 or H; R' is a C.sub.5 to C.sub.18 alkyl or fluoroalkyl group; n is an integer between 2 and 6 inclusive; and x is an integer between 3 and 26 inclusive. These telomers are surface active and are useful as aids for coating applications.
