Abstract: One embodiment of the disclosure includes an input module. The input module includes a switch, a rotatable and translatable input member operably connected to the switch and configured to actuate the switch, and an electrical contact operably connected to the switch and in electrical communication with the input member. During operation, the electrical connection between the input member and the electrical contact is maintained during translation and rotation of the input member. The input module may be used with a variety of electronic devices and can be used by a user to provide input to those devices.

Abstract: An electronic device has a housing and a rotatable and translatable input mechanism. The housing has an aperture and the rotatable and translatable input mechanism has a shaft positioned at least partially within the aperture and a manipulation structure coupled to the shaft. The manipulation structure may be manipulated to rotationally and translationally move the shaft to provide rotational and translational input to the electronic device. A compressible seal is positioned in a gap between the housing and the rotatable and translatable input mechanism. The compressible seal may resist and/or prevent passage of contaminants into the aperture and/or obscure one or more internal components. The compressible seal may be configured to collapse or bend when the rotatable and translatable member translates.

The wearable electronic device includes an enclosure having a sidewall with a button aperture defined therethrough, a display connected to the enclosure, a processing element in communication with the display. The device also includes a sensing element in communication with the processing element and an input button at least partially received within the button aperture and in communication with the sensing element, the input button configured to receive two types of user inputs. During operation, the sensing element tracks movement of the input button to determine the two types of user inputs.

Abstract: Embodiments are directed to a watch having a touch-sensitive display and a switch assembly positioned along or within an enclosure. The switch assembly includes a shaft extending into an opening of the enclosure and is configured to receive rotational and translational input. A first sensor, positioned within the enclosure, is configured to detect the rotational input. A second sensor, positioned within the enclosure, is configured to detect the translational input. The watch also includes a touch-sensitive display configured to receive touch input and to depict a graphical output of the watch. The graphical output may be responsive to various inputs, including a touch input provided at the display, the translational input provided at the switch assembly, and the rotational input provided at the switch assembly.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method of installing a component in an electronic device is described. A light source shines a light through an aperture of on one end of the electronic device. A light sensor positioned on the opposite end moves with a fixture having the component. When the light sensor determines a central portion of the light, the fixture and the component may be aligned with the aperture of the electronic device, and the fixture installs the component. In another embodiment, a method of detecting proper installment of the component is described. A microphone may be used to detect sound transmission from a speaker which transmits sound through the aperture. If the microphone detects sounds from an interface region between the component and the housing, the component is not properly installed.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with printed circuits. Electrical components may be interconnected using signal paths formed from metal traces in the printed circuits. The printed circuits may include flexible printed circuits with bent configurations. The flexible printed circuits may be provided with integral bend retention structures. A bend retention structure may be formed from a polymer layer, a solder layer, a stiffener formed from metal or polymer that is attached to flexible printed circuit layers with adhesive, a conformal plastic coating that covers exposed metal traces at a bend, a metal stiffener with screw holes, a shape memory alloy, a portion of a flexible printed circuit dielectric substrate layer with a reduced elongation at yield value, or combinations of these structures. The bend retention structure maintains a bend in a bent flexible printed circuit.
