Abstract: A temperature sensor includes a photon source, a fluorescent element and a photodetector. The fluorescent element includes a temperature-insensitive first fluorophore and a temperature-sensitive second fluorophore. The photodetector includes a first photosensor exhibiting a first spectral responsivity and a second photosensor exhibiting a second spectral responsivity. To measure a temperature of a surface, the fluorescent element may be placed adjacent to the surface and irradiated with a photon beam. First photons emitted from the first fluorophore and second photons emitted from the second fluorophore are collected. The first and second photons may be transmitted as a single dichromatic beam to the photodetector. The photosensors generate two different photodetector output signals, the ratio of which may be correlated to temperature.

Abstract: A fluorine-containing porcelain, such as a porcelain material comprising a fluorine-doped glass, is provided for use in dental applications. The porcelain may be used to overlie at least a portion of a dental component such that an interface between the porcelain and the dental component comprises a fluorinated metal oxide. Methods for producing such fluorine-containing porcelains and for treating dental components with such fluorine-containing porcelains are also provided. The fluorine-containing porcelain may exhibit enhanced bonding to the underlying dental component such as a high strength ceramic.

Abstract: A fiber-based reflective lighting device. The lighting device includes a source configured to generate a primary light, a substrate including a mat of reflective nanofibers, and a light exit configured to emanate the reflected light. The fibers have an average fiber diameter AFD less than 500 nm which diffusively reflects visible light upon illumination with at least the primary light. The mat has a basis weight less than 40 gram per square meter (gsm) and a reflectance greater than 80%.

Abstract: A multiple flow-based microfluidic cell culture system that emulates mammalian physiology is provided. Tissue-mimicking cell cultures are connected by flow within a physiologically meaningful arrangement so that the pharmacokinetics of various agents to be tested in the system emulate in vivo conditions. The system includes at least two organ tissue modules, each organ tissue module including a first chamber containing an organ tissue cell, the first chamber including an inlet and an outlet for flow of an organ tissue cell-specific culture medium; a second chamber including an inlet and an outlet for flow of a blood material; and a semi-permeable membrane separating the first and second chambers. The flow of blood material through each organ tissue module is interconnected and the flow of tissue-cell specific culture medium is directed to a single organ tissue module.

Abstract: A device for stimulable light emission that includes a fiber mat of nanofibers having an average fiber diameter in a range between 100 and 2000 nm, and includes plural stimulable particles disposed in association with the nanofibers. The stimulable particles produce secondary light emission upon receiving primary light at a wavelength λ. The average fiber diameter is comparable in size to the wavelength λ in order to provide scattering sites within the fiber mat for the primary light. Various methods for making suitable luminescent nanofiber mats include: electrospinning a polymer solution including or not including the stimulable particles and forming from the electrospun solution nanofibers having an average fiber diameter between 100 and 2000 nm. Methods, which electrospin without the stimulable particles, introduce the stimulable particles during electrospinning or after electrospinning to the fibers and therefore to the resultant fiber mat.
