    Abstract: Electro-optical apparatus for preventing lock-in in a laser angular rate sensor. A Faraday material is placed between two wave plates, the birefringence of each wave plate varying in response to applied electric fields. The two wave plates may be positioned so that the principal axes of their index ellipses are substantially orthogonal to one another. A cyclic voltage of high frequency is applied to each wave plate to rapidly and cyclically vary its birefringence. This achieves biasing apparatus having a longer effective optical path length first in one direction and then in the opposite direction.

    Abstract: A circuit for use with a sensor located in a hazardous area such as in an atmosphere of explosive gases, organized to prevent electrical power at the sensor from exceeding prescribed levels even upon reasonably foreseeable failures of parts of the circuit. The circuit, which is located in a non-hazardous area, includes an indicator, such as a relay-controlled alarm, to respond to the sensor, and terminals for connection to a source of line voltage. Two voltage step-down transformers have their secondaries connected in series with one another and with the sensor. The primary of one transformer is connected to the line voltage source; and the primary of the other transformer is connected to the indicator. Each transformer secondary lies intermediate a pair of current limiting resistors, and the primary and secondary windings of each transformer are isolated by means of a grounded conductive sheet. Each transformer, along with its associated current limiting secondary resistors, is embedded in potting material to form a self-contained isolating circuit module. The circuit is intended to be connected to a remote ground terminal as well as the ground terminal of the line voltage source. A ground integrity detector circuit interrelates these three terminals by means of resistances and a neon glow tube to provide a signal whenever one of the ground circuits is lost, as well as a signal upon failure of one of the resistances forming the ground integrity detection circuit. The remote ground connection has a path extending through the circuit chassis to insure that its ground is maintained.

    Abstract: An auto-focus camera including an objective lens device and a focal plane shutter has a first deflector device mounted on the focal plane shutter to reflect light from the objective lens device toward a second deflection device when the shutter is closed. The second deflection device, in turn, deflects radiation received thereby to form first and second auxiliary images of an object to be photographed on first and second arrays of light responsive elements, respectively. The second deflection device and the first and second arrays of light responsive elements are positioned out of the light path between the objective lens device and the focal plane shutter. As the objective lens is moved to vary the focus of the principal image to be formed on the light sensitive film of the camera, the intensity distribution of the first and second auxiliary images is also varied. The apparatus is so arranged that when the distributions of the first and second images are substantially equal, the objective lens is in a position to properly focus the principal image, of the object to be photographed, on the light sensitive film. A signal processing circuit connected between the light responsive elements and a control circuit responds to signals provided by the light responsive elements to determine when the distribution of the first and second auxiliary images are substantially equal at which time an ''''in focus'''' signal is provided to the control circuit to terminate the movement of the objective lens device. In another embodiment, the first and second arrays of light responsive elements are mounted on a nonreflective side of a reflex mirror in a single lens reflex camera.

    Abstract: The disclosure describes a digital acoustic direction determination system comprising a plurality of transducers each capable of producing electrical signals in response to an acoustic wave. Selection logic circuitry determines the octant or 45 degree arc segment from which the sound originates and transmits an octant digital number representing the octant to an adder. As soon as the wave strikes one of the transducers, a clock generator begins to step a shift register which has stored in it a predetermined bit pattern. The sum of the pulses shifted out of the shift register is proportional to the angle within the selected octant from which the sound originates. These pulses are summed in a counter. The contents of the counter are summed in the adder with the digital number representing the octant. The resultant sum is the exact bearing of the sound origin in degrees.
